Most likely in about 10-15 years the main issue with the metric system is the expence of changing all the scales in America, reprinting all text books, and redesigning most software. But once the older generation that does not know the metric system is gone America may switch over.

5 years ago I would have said NEVER, we Americans are too proud, too lazy, and we are already subjected to too many changes in our lives everyday...

However, now the globalizing economy is forcing American manufacturing companies (such as the one I work for) to supply metric documentation for their products. I'll bet the same thing is happening in the global services sector. Companies will need people who understand the metric system. That will create a demand on our education system.

It will take a while, but it is coming. The economy is becoming global, and the rest of the world is not about to start talking inches and yards.

when Thomas Jefferson is resurrected on earth. he did propose using the metric system.
or when americans are convinced that using 0 and 100 as fixed points are easier than 32 and 212.
most likely, america isn't going to use the metric system anytime soon because the people aren't ready for it. they passed the metric system as official already but still do everything in imperial.

The problem is certain things like piping which I think can take a very long time to change.

Also there is a cost in changing to the metric system for both the industry and education.

American manufacturing, design and science already does, though it is not unversal in every industry.

The general population hasn't caught up yet.

Canada and UK popularly use a mixture of Imperial and metric measures.

never, because we know how long a yard is, but not a meter! when someone says an object is 3 meters long, we have no idea if that means it really big or not so big. if they say its 3 yards long, then we know what they are talking about.
