I just had all of my wisdom teeth removed. Are the stitches they put in going to dissolve or what?

Your dentist, when pulling out the wisdom teeth, should have told you want type of stitches they are -- whether they will dissolve or need to be removed.

In most cases though, especially with this location, the stitches will be the dissolving kind.

Dentist should have told you but they are usually dissolvers. Call and find out. It is really important to keep those holes closed and clean. If you get any food particles or anything in one of those gigantic holes, you will have pain beyond belief. Also, if you disturb the area by brushing too hard, you can get a condition called dry socket. That pain will send you to the moon. Stay away from the holes with the toothbrush and leave the area alone and you will be find. Because of the seriousness of the healing involved here, the dentist may have put in removable stitches. You need to find out but in the meantime, leave the area completely alone. It might sound unhygienic but if you get a dry socket you will know the pain of which I speak..

This kind of depends on the surgeon's preference.
Many oral surgeons like to use dissolvable stitches (like chromic gut), and these will fall out on their own in 3-7 days or so.

However, there are surgeons who like to make sure that their patients will return for their follow-up appointment, and they use a non-dissolvable stitch material (like silk). You HAVE to go back for your appointment so the surgeon can take out the stitches!
