Since the whole story is a myth, it's not surprising that they got lost. Also, the road signs were in Arabic.

They were being punished by GOD.
When Moses left them alone in the desert to go up to receive the 10 commandments, Moses was gone for a while and the people lost hope, so gathered up and melted down their gold and made it into a golden calf to which the people were praying and worshiping when Moses got back from Mr.Sinai with the 10 commandments.
God punished the people and made them wander the desert for 40 years so that no one who had participated in the golden calf worship would still be alive to see the promised land.

There is still the joke amongst Jews about being wondering Jews, even by the rabbi when we roam the halls during services.

Supposedly it was because they turned back to idolatry after
only 40 days of Moses being on the mountain. Myself, I
understand that they did this because they had seen magic
before in Egypt. And they thought Moses was the one that
did the miracles. So why would our Creator punish them, and force them all to die, and only let their descendants into the
Holy Land?
The first word for God in the Book is Elohim. Which means
more than one god. The "God" we don't understand in the
Old Testamnet was the Powers and Principalities. That
has a negative connotation, but it just lets us know there
is a government structure in the spirit world.
This is one of those paradoxes. They do God,s will in that noone
is in power except who our Creator (lets) be in power. But they
don't do our Creators will in that He gives commands for everything.
It says our Creator will punish the Hosts of Heaven too. So not everything they do is righteous in the eyes of our
Creator.

When following the story, i think the spiritual infighting of the israelites led them astray.

if u remember, God said He would lead them as a pillar of cloud and as a pillar of fire or sumthin like th@.

i believe since we co-create reality with our maker, the end result of the israelites doing things such as worshipping other gods and being rebellious to Moses' leadership diagramatically showed up as what was leading them almost leading them away. After all that was their worst fear (the israelites), th@ they were being lead nonsensically 2 nowhere. Because they feared that, that's what (almost) happened (i believe this is how the universe works, so that we evolve 4rm fear etc.).

Simply put, their long struggle 2 get there was due to the manifestation of their fear and distrust of what was leading them there.

That was their punishment for unbelief. Remember the 12 spys...10 unfaithful but 2 were faithful... Joshua and Caleb. It was God's refining process to keep them in the desert for 40 years. When they were finally ready to enter the promised land, it was Joshua that led them.

After their idolatry, God caused them to wander the desert for 40 years so that particular generation would have passed away before they were allowed to enter into the land of milk and honey.

They were cursed by God to wander for 40 years because they rebelled against God and moaned and groaned about having no Onions and cucumbers and just had manna to eat. This was after the 10 plagues of Egypt and other miracles and they still grumbled. Personally I am surprised God didn't exterminate them from the face of the earth

Because in the desert everything looks the same, so it's hard to tell if you've gone past the same piece of land once, twice or a hundred times before.

Because they were a stiff necked people. Stubborn with the Egyptian bondage in their understanding that they couldn't let go of.

God was teaching them to depend on the LORD God in everything. It is God who led them.

Because of lack of faith, none except Joshua & Caleb (men of faith) & the ones that were young at the time of deliverence from Egyptian bondage, entered into the promise land (Land between the Egyptian river and Euphraties river).

I guess the moral of the story is to not complain but to give thanks in all things. Speak the positive victorious Word of God (like Joshua & Caleb) & cast down negative defeative statements (like those who complained about being wimpy like grasshoppers or why did God bring us here to die).

The power of the words we say. The power of life & death is in the tongue.

The hope was so that the generations who grew up in Egypt would die off so that the young would not be hardwired with that particular social ethos

Because there has never been a place called Israel.

It is and always was called Palestine.

Pretending it is called Israel is what is causing all of the killing in the middle east.
