I could understand why they would protect the witness, the police do not want the person put into danger. As far as giving out information they don't want to give out information that only the person that committed the crime would know. I think it is normal to with hold information from the press. I am sure they have a reason.

There may be clues to the murder that only the police and the murderer know. If those details are leaked then other loonies may confess to the murder, causing the investigation to go in all directions. She should not talk to the media. It could be life threatening to her if the murderer knows she was a witness. Sometimes crimes are not solved for years and she could be in danger all that time. Let the police handle this and advise your friend to stay quiet on this subject. We to had a murder several years ago. It went unsolved for many years until another young girl reported her abusive boyfriend to the police. The now available DNA proved this man who was the murdered girls boyfriend at the time of the crime was the murderer. Finally! It sometimes takes time.

The best possibility I can think of under the facts you listed is that the killer(s) said something unusual or odd. They might want to keep that a secret so that if someone confesses and knows what was said, it validates the confession. They might want to keep it a secret because it reveals something about their identity.
Of course, it is also possible that the witness simply doesn't want to talk to the media, and is just saying that so they'll leave her alone.
Or it's possible that the police haven't a clue what they are doing, and one of them saw Lenny Brisco tell a witness not to talk to the media and figures that's state-of-the-art investigation technique.

Yes, it's normal. They don't want to hinder the investigation by laying all their cards on the table and letting the murderer know exactly how far they are in their investigation. Be patient and pray they get the information they need to lock up that murderer forever.

I think that the police have a strategie, and that is if they release any information they have, say for example like little details of the suspects appearance then the person who did the killing would find out through the media and try to change their appearance, but so long as he thinks they don't know, then maybe he won't change how he looks.

They probably want to protect the witness and investigation. They may also want to prevent a copycat murder.

Because they are still investigating, and do not want to ruin the trial. Do you know what indefinitely means?
