No offense, but the dead are dead! You can't do anything for their soul once they're gone.

I meant to say: "Why do SOME people pray for the dead"? Typo.

Yes they cant do anything for their soul but we can. Thats why we pray for them, they need us. God accepts our prays for everyone, he/she doesnt have to be alive. If you are happy and satisfied from someone and if he/she is dead, you pray for him and God listens your pray and relieves him/her for his/her good behaviour.

Of course the dead are dead! That's a given! But once dead, where is the energy that animated their bodies? What most here refer to as the soul?

Having just been to a Samhain Ritual where the dead were invited to participate, I understand fully why most religions have some kind of Day of the Dead. It is to honor your ancestors - those who came before and gave you the gift of life. It's also to aid the recently dead.

To understand, you would have to be of a mind that accepts that once the physical body is gone, the essence of the individual lives on. If not, if you think once dead that's it, then getting a sense of the beauty of such rituals will be lost on you.

Okay. I'll take this as a serious question and not as a putdown.

Some religions, the Roman Catholics to name one, believe that people have souls. A soul is something believed to survive after the body has died. The soul then enters a transistory state in preparation for judgment or atonement. In the Roman Catholic belief, this place or state is called purgatory. Other religions have similar concepts and beliefs.

Praying for the dead is believed to help these souls atone for their sins committed while on earth.

Indeed the dead are dead, but you can still pray the God finds favor in them.

Ecc 9:5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Ecc 9:6 Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun.

That's one belief. Not everyone shares it. Those who don't, pray.

Our spirits have telepathic and empathic ability. We can KNOW
each others thoughts. FEEL each others pain. That's why the
Book warns about spirit communication. Because it
works!
Spirits have better things to do than keep coming back to our world to satisfy our doubts and fears. Like they say, the Road to hell is paved with good intentions. Prayer CAN be imposing on our will on others as much as black magic. Make your
request to our Creator, and ask that His will be done.
The teaching is, when we comminicate with other beings, let
them come to you. And always ask our Highest Power for
guidance and protection, as there are negative entities out
there.

Cause they Haven't Renewed their Minds to what "GOD said about Leaving the Earth for Good" in the Bible.
We miss them, BUT, If my Dad had decided (in the Past) to MOVE to Another State and Live--I woulda' Missed him, but I would Know where he Was and knew that I could See him LATER.
I wouldn't go Around Boo-Hoo'ing and getting into all of that Sorrow "of the World" that can HURT you.
Now would I?
No, cause I would Know were he was and would See'm LATER.

My dad died several Years ago---I didn't get into all of that Boo-Hoo'ing, cause I KNOW where he is and I will See'm LATER.
And, I miss him.

Funny Thing: People wait till somebody Dies THEN READS the Word of GOD to them(Over them) at the Funeral.
If they had Got the Word of GOD in them befor they died, they Might not of Died!

It is a pagan ideal, Yes, no one can do any good for someone already dead, Catholics, think they can make a saint out of someone that has been dead many yrs. & the more money you have, the sooner you can get a love one into heaven, That is also pagan.
