I know it should be atleast 18 months because of the dangers of growing dogs injuring themselves when jumping. My instructor who preaches this has a 18 month old dog with agility titles though! It must have started at aleast a year then. My 6 month old Sheltie is going to be great at agility and I'd like to aim around spring for her first trial. She just got 2 legs towards her CD in novice obedience.

I discussed the subject of jumping with my vet. I wanted to teach my golden retriever to catch a frisbee but my bf didn't think she should until she was full grown. The vet said that what I should do if I was worried about it is give her vitamin C pills. apparently this helps with the development of the bones. He suggested 10mg/pound twice a day.

Congratulations on having a dog that is well-trained. I had mine in Clicker training but it was so embarrassing because she acted like she was stupid at the classes. She is ten months old now and never did learn the extended stay command.

I think it depends on who sponsors it. I think the AKC requires 18 months, but some others it's 15 months.

We're in classes to persue agility and our trainer tells us not to do any kind of jumping higher than the elbow until the dog is 15 months for the reason you stated above.

No dog may enter any AKC event until they are 6 mons.
Older than that is the choice of the owner!

WHY take a dog ANYWHERE if it's not ready??? WASTE of MONEY!!! LOL!

It does not need to be old, it needs to be trained well and you should go to the dog gym and stuff like that. It also has to be a very UNnervous dog so it does not get stage fright.
