My migraine lasts between 6 and 12 hours. I have learnt to take the pain killer as soon as I feel it coming around. It does help in reducing the time span. Ibuprofen works great for me. Asprins work equally good especially the ones that can be dissolved in water since they tend to act faster. Also intake of caffine in the form of coffee does me good. I am extremely photosensitive when I have migraine so I just lie still in a darkened room. Most docs prescribe anti-nauseous pill as well to get rid of the sick feeling. Getting to sleep may be difficult initially but I try my best and usually wake up a while later minus the headache. Now, I realise the frequency of my migraines has dropped considerably. Good luck! Hope you can get rid of the headaches.

the only medication that helps me is Advil Migraine. i take it when the twinges of pain begin and it works almost immediately. if the migraine has already started, the Advil will kick in within an hour or two.
i swear by this medication and seldom go anywhere without access to a bottle of pills.
before starting to use Advil, i'd drink 7 up or ginger ale, which caused nausea, then vomiting. within 45 minutes after vomiting the pain would subside.
Best of luck with controlling these monster headaches!

Imitrex. Period. I suffered with these things for YEARS before this stuff came out and I'm telling you with God as my witness that this stuff is a miracle drug. There are other similar types of prescription migraine meds that may work as well or even better for you, but by all means, seek this stuff out and find one. You'll be glad you did.

Well, first I try to prevent them in the first place. (The link will provide you with some other ideas.) But if that doesn't work then I take an Ultram and go to bed.
I can't take any of my rescue meds due to a clotting disorder that I have called Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome.

I take Excedrin Migraine and it works for me. I have taken Imitrex and it works great, but is expensive. Just relax and go somewhere quiet and dark. If you stress, it will last longer.
