It's hard to concentrate on working out with chicks around. Also I am paranoid that they are laughing at me.

No, I don't think they do. Honestly, just ignore the people at the gym. I used to be shy about going to the gym when I first started years ago. There are plenty of other self conscious people there who have their own bodies to worry about.
Just do yourself a favor and spend some time with a personal trainer so you know how to do the exercises properly. If something is going to cause people to make fun of someone else at a gym, its when people do the exercises wrong, use poor form, more weight then they can handle, or just make a general @ss out of themselves by having a stupid workout. And just wear normal gym clothes like everyone else. If you do those things, people will generally ignore you.
Oh, and also, don't try to pick up girls in the gym and don't chat with people who are in the middle of working out, those things drive people up the wall.
Also, if you are just getting started and are shy about the gym, go when its less crowded. ie. Don't go between 5-8 in the evening, because that tends to be peak time when gyms turn into meat markets and big social scenes. Go early in the morning, when the dedicated people show up.
Oh, and one other thing to always remember - Everyone at some point was "just starting out" at the gym and did not know what they were doing and maybe weren't in the greatest shape or they were weak. I used to be a skinny kid myself and was very shy about going to the gym. I'd be lucky if I could bench press 135 pounds. Today I do 300 pounds without even thinking about it. Everyone has to start somewhere!

I am sure they do have mens gyms, but if they turn women away, they're at a risk for getting sued for turning them away. I prefer to work out at a woman's gym and I do, but you will have to look it up in your yellow pages, in your own hometown. Also you can check it out on the Internet. Do it locally, (put your zip-code in) and something may be out there. You could always buy some equipment, (if you have the money,) and work out at home.

Not that I've ever seen. Seems like it would be against the law to discriminate against women, even though women have gyms that exclude men....Go Figure.

They're not laughing at you.
