Some children can hold their breath until they pass out - it is called classic breathholding syndrome. This does not cause brain damage because as soon as you pass out, your autonomous system takes over and you start breathing again.
If you are being deprived of air for some other reason however (e.g. choking), this is an entirely different problem.

Yes, it can cause brain damage! And it is cumulative (adds up over time) and incurable! If you know anybody that 'huffs' (concentrates sprays in a plastic bag and inhales them) or indulges in asphyixiation as a form of play, they are asking for death or a living death. Please don't do this to yourself. The fun is not worth the risk. If you know anybody that does this, warn them not to-- and don't give them any ideas! please!

There are a lot of other fun things to do that don't involve abusing substances or your body. If someone does this even once deliberately, that is too much! You wouldn't consider cutting your fingers off, one at a time, would you...?

Have you ever seen someone who had a stroke...? They sit around all day and can't feed themselves or bathe themselves, and have to wear diapers because they can't even wipe themselves when they crap anymore. Strokes are caused by blood clots in the brain, when a part of the brain gets cut off from the oxygen it needs and gets damaged. It only takes a minute for permanent damage to occur. They can't even talk or smile any more, all they can do is sit there and suffer!

Is that how you would like to live for the rest of your life...? Helpless, unable to move, or even talk...?

Talk to someone about this, your parents, your family doctor, a teacher or guidance counselor at school. Don't hide from life! There are a lot of people, like the actor Christopher Reeves (who is now deceased) and the physicist Stephen Hawking (who is still hanging on) who would have loved to have a young, healthy body again. You still have plenty of time to enjoy life. Don't throw away what you have.

Yes, it will cause brain damage if you are deprived of air until you pass out. the effects may or may not be visible depending on the frequency. however, no matter what, it will cause slow brain damage which will show syptoms in old age.

Deprived of air how?

If you hold your breath and pass out your body's automatic reflex will cause you to breathe again with no ill effect.

If you are talking about somebody manually strangling or smothering you - its a whole different thing as you are relying on them being sufficiently skillful to stop soon enough.

If you are doing it to yourself then perhaps you need to research how Michael Hutchence (INXS) died.

Asking the question you asked is proof that it has already had an effect....

When you deprive the brain of oxygen you kill brain cells, lots of them.

Not a smart thing to do.

It certainly will. I hope you aren't doing those "California Rushes". I'm sure you & your friends would feel bad if you or one of your friends died. My friends used to do this. It was pretty cool until one of my girlfriends hit her head on a corner of a table & bled EVERYWHERE!
