Ask the dentist about his education. Does your dentist continue to take classes to upgrade his/her techniques? Does the staff offer preventive care for teeth and gums? Are you comfortable with the work the dentist has done? Does the dentist fix problems that happen because of his/her work without an extra charge to you? Does the dentist offer emergency care? Are the fees in line with those charged in your area? Do you get a full bill explain all of the charges?

Does the dentist have competent assistants and office staff? Are staff members pleasant and well trained? Is the dental office clean and comfortable?

If you answered NO to several of these questions, find a new dentist.

If there is little or no pain when they fix your teeth.
Is the Dentist and their staff always talking and smiling?
If they are always serious and looking annoyed, not a good place to work at - and NOT good for the patient - you!

Women dentists are more gentle and kind. Men dentists sometimes are in a bit of a hurry.

I find that dentists that do cosmetic dentistry seem to do a better job with the normal stuff, and very little pain.

actually it is difficult for patients to tell. just because a dentist has a good chairside manner, and his staff and office are nice does NOT mean he is a good dentist. my recommendation would be to look in your phone book in the yellow pages, under laboratories, dental and call a few labs and ask for a referrals to a good dentist. We are the ones who see what kind of work dentists do and how good they are and how much they really care about their patients! you could also go to the website for the american academy of cosmetic dentistry ( www.aacd.com) and find a dentist in your area. good luck to you!

If there are more than one dentists, a nice office, some secretaries(maybe hygienists), magazine rack and things like that then you're going to a good dentist..Oh and stay away from dentists that charge a fee that is unusually low....They might be fakes...

You should be informed by them of what they are doing and why. You should feel condifent in their training. You should not feel undue pain and they should be very attentive to your needs for pain relief. You should find it is easy to talk to them. Their work should last and work well without discomfort.
