I've flown all over the world for all of my adult life. Suddenly, at age 36, I'm no longer able to even go up in a glass elevator. I think that for a phobia to come on suddenly like this, there could be a chemical reason. I've been taking Wellbutrin for 3+ years. Is this one of the side effects?

I scanned some research docs and there's nothing that can point directly to a side effect pointing to acute phobia, especially after 3+ years, especially for Wellbutrin. Since it is a multiple reuptake inhibitor, that effects norepinephrine and dopemine, it's often abused recreationally, similar to an amphetamine. Knowing this, common logic dictates that it would have the opposite effect of what you described.

One thing that make sense to me, is that Wellbutrin is a multiple reuptake inhibitor, where it's not uncommon for any type of uptake inhibitor (including SSRI's) to stop working sporadically.

If that is the case, you may be experiencing harsh withdrawal symptoms, specifically in the realm of paranoia and irritability.

This is purely speculative based on a slew of data I read up on for psychotropic drugs. My recommendation is to ask your Dr. if this is possible and if he/she agrees, switch you to another MRI or SSRI that will offset these feelings/thoughts.

Hope you get better.

Are you taking Wellbutrin for depression? The side effects are listed as weight loss, loss of appetite, dry mouth, skin rash, sweating, ringing in the ears, shakiness, stomach pain, agitation, anxiety, dizziness, trouble sleeping, muscle pain, nausea, fast heartbeat, sore throat, and urninating more often. Most of these symptoms may occur when starting the medication. You have been on it for quite some time. You can research Wellbutrin by typing in your search bar "side effects of wellbutrin" and "effects of prolonged use of wellbutrin". Research as much information as you can so you will be informed and can then talk to your doctor about your medication. Also, remember that long term use of Wellbutrin can cause dependency/addiction. If you are taking it for depression, why are you still depressed to the point of needing medication after 3 years? Have you ever talked to your doctor about weaning off of this med? I would be a little concerned about taking this type of medication for such a long period of time. My sister went thru depression and suicide attempt. I understand it is a long process but by this time you should be seeing some improvement in yourself and start to cut back the medications. Good Luck!

Brittney's funny. Yes, Wellbutrin made me paranoid of heights. In fact, I would pace up and down the hall all night freaking out about having to get up on the roof and clean out of the gutters when I was taking that crap. Thank God, I found a way out of the depression and no longer take meds....
