and that in fact it wasnt Russia who actually contributed more to the demise of Hitler and his army than any other single country (including that of my own countries Australia and England)

As much as, I disagree with American policy they alone were responsible for the winning of WW II. German had already whipped every Army in the European theater and if their generals had done what they wanted, England would have fallen at Dunkirk. The British land forces affectively ended there as in North Africa if not for Americans opening a second front Erwin Rommel would have finished them. The only contribution they made to the war effort was their bombings and providing a staging area. Don’t misunderstand me their bravery and desire to provide contributions are unquestionable. The Russians were effectively finished Stalin begged and DEMANDED we open a second front and without our material, they would be speaking German. No for once, the American actually did what they say they did and they alone were more responsible for winning the war.

All allies contributed and when lives are lost it is a delicate
subject to name one single country. However Great Britain
was the major allied country, but we should not forget that
those who could flee from France, Belgium, Poland, Holland,
Austria, Norway all landed up in the UK.

We must also remember that some Americans volunteered
and came over to the UK before their country entered the war,
as did the Canadians and some other Nations that believed
in the Allied effort and necessity. The Commonwealth, in
general, did their important part, remembering that that the
Commonwealth was not only Australia, New Zealand and
Canada, but many others joined freely and who will never
be forgotten.

This created a large number of people who had to be housed
and fed in Britain. So the American contribution started well
before their declaration of war.

The Americans built their Liberty ships very quickly and started
a flow of supplies, oil, food and all the necessities to able the
Allies keep the front from being invaded. This was the reason
Hitler‘s main tactic was to sink these supply vessels with their
U submarines. Britain could not have faced the attacks without
these supplies.

Taking all into account it is very difficult to pinpoint one given
country as having won the war. It was a joint effort with Russia
attacking the from the East side and the other allies from all
other sides.

I do not believe that the Americans stake a claim for having won
the war, but without their help, before and after, this would have
been an impossible task.

So cheers to all the Allies, large or small as they may have been,
or the single spy who, on his own risked his life to send valuable
information, you all are the victors and shall never be forgotten.

the truth of the matter is that it is 50-50, the Russians took Europe from the west, btw they also invaded poland at the same time the germans did but no one said anything, so the Soviets took Russia from the west and the Americans took Europe, Italy, and Africa. The US took their time because they knew Russia was only a friend until wars end and want them to exhaust most of their resources. So the Soviets took back what they lost and kept Hitler bogged down in the west opening up his eastern flank and southern flanks, so this really makes it more Allies 70-Soviets 30. Not to mention the fact that most of the airial bombardments were done by the US and Britain...i dont know too much about the role the aussies played but i know they were at least on the ground, and dont forget canada helped out as well. So that is the European theatre, The war didnt end there, We go over to the Pacific Theatre where the war was mainly won by the Chinese, US, some British, and Aussie forces, the Russians on the other hand helped in "liberating" china and mongolia, I do not know if the Japanese ever got their teeth into Soviet lands though. So with this and the fact that Europe was pretty much rebuilt by the US and defended against Soviet expansion by the US many believe that the US did more. Just because Russia had poor leaders and was willing to sacrifice chunks of its population, and kill those who retreated does not mean they did more. The US fought with technology and strategy, the Soviets fought with overwhelming man power, and brute force, they did get better equipment towards the middle of the war (better than the US equipment at the time), but all in all the soviets suffered higher casualties because of the paranoid leader stalin had all of his generals killed or they fled to escape being killed. Scorched Earth.

Oh and BTW the germans wanted the Allies to get to Berlin first and were informed to put up less of a Resistance on the west (like the last few weeks of the war when the germans knew they were done in) The germans were terrified of what the Soviets might do to them and were desparately hoping for the americans to reach Berlin first.

The Axis forces would have won World War II if not for the United States of America. As one person on this site eloquently stated, America provided the supplies, Russia supplied the men, and the UK gave the most quotable quotes.
Remember, it was someone in the UK who thought up, so don't blame me. It is just an eloquent statement of the various allied contributions.
The USA supplied the Russians, who in turn diverted huge numbers of German soldiers to the Eastern front. The UK fought down the Luftwaffe, and then the US in turn started daylight bombings of Nazi Germany. So, basically, all countries contributed to the fight, but the US of A was the nerve center.

One cannot deny that the USA contributed, albeit a little late, but they certainly didn't win the War single handed. The contribution from the Soviet Union (not Russia) was enormous. The death toll (military and civilian) far in excess of the other allies, which is why Churchill waited for Stalin's troops to get to Berlin.
Hitler's big mistake was believing he could do better than Napoleon. He opened up the second (eastern) front.

With the answers you've got so far we could, at least, have a diplomatic incident on our hands. Some people have - rightly - pointed to the Aussies and Canadians for their contribution, but you're all forgetting that India (and this is when Pakistan and Bangladesh had not broken away from India), the West Indies and so many other nations that contributed to the war effort. - that's why they're called the 'allies' because if all the nations were listed it would take some time.

Some of the American answers are such a hop, skip and jump away from the truth. And I ask them to ponder this question: why were America supplying the countries already in the war? The answer my friends is PROFIT. The Americans sat out of the war for as long as they could profiteering from the countries fighting fascism who needed supplies. It was only when the merchant navy bringing supplies from America to Europe had been brought to its knees and the German U-boats were just off American shores, coupled with Pearl harbour that America decided to get involved - their export regime was in jeopardy and they'd been attacked so they could ignore the war no longer.

Of course the American contribution made a difference. The Allied forces were on their knees by this point after fighting for some time. The Russian front had become a desolate and grim stand off. The Germans had swept across Europe and advanced through France. (note to person here who suggests France did nothing - their Resistance movement worked with allied forces and contributed tremendously, but of course the country did nothing THEY WERE OCCUPIED BY THE GERMANS).

It should not be lost on Americans that, had they joined the war earlier, the war might have been over all that sooner. They shouldn't make themselves out to be heroes riding on on white horses to save Europe and should remember that they only got involved when self-interest dictated it.

But lets all remember this is history. The important thing to remember is that thousands upon thousands gave their lives for our freedom. - After all, its Remembrance Day next weekend.... have you bought your poppy yet?

Wow! And all this time I thought the Allies won the war!
But how much did Russia contribute to fighting the Japanese?
The Pacific theater was half of the war. UK was there, Australia was there and the US was there. The Russians were barely there.
If I remember my history correctly, the peace treaty was signed on the USS Missouri in front of General MacArthur. But hey, it was all a Allied Victory!

By the way, I am an American citizen that lives right smack in the middle of the heartland. I was never taught, nor have I ever heard that we won the war by ourselves. As for Germany and the Russians, the European Theater wasn't won on just the eastern front. It was also won through North Africa, France and the rest of the western front.

Learn a little history son. Most of the supplies that kept Russia going the first two years came from America. Without it they were toast. Without forcing Hitler to face two fronts Russia was cold meat. It was the combination mostly. If America stays out of WWII Britain and Switzerland are possibly the only two free countries in Europe, maybe. Without America, England cannot hit Normandy when they did. Probably not for years. Without the invasion at Normandy Germany could use almost all of their armed forces in Russia. As it was Germany came within one cold month of taking all of Russia If Germany could have used the Army groups fighting in France in Russia it would not even have been close. Russians would be eating Sauerkraut. Without Russia the Allies would have fought Germany for many more years. Learn it right, don't try to spin something just because you don't like America. Hell Japan defeated Russia all by themselves a few years before. Read real history

When did Russia fight Japan during WWII. Was Russia fighting in both theaters? Who shipped millions of tons of arms, food and supplies to Russia to keep them from collapsing. At the beginning of Russia's part of WWII they were sending companies of men into combat with enough weapons for almost half of them. When the guy in front of you died you picked up the weapon and took your turn. The US was a major part of the victory over the Axis in WWII. I doubt if many Americans don't remember we weren't the only ones fighting. HOWEVER if it wasn't for America what language would England be speaking now? If not for the Americans contributing the lions share of the attacks in Italy and the beaches of Normandy, Germany would have had many more divisions to throw at Russia. Without the Americans there would have been no D-Day. Do you think Russia would have stopped with overrunning Germany only? All of Europe would have been theirs for the taking, to include the Med. Who would have stopped them?? Australia? England? The French Underground? Switzerland? If not for America you would either be speaking German or Russian. Except the fact and be glad we are on the same side and had your back.

The Russians have been basically whipping boys meant to slaughter their own forces until eventually the Western Allies ought to open up a 2nd front. They succeeded in no longer something yet killing their own troops. Had the British, human beings, and Canadians no longer landed at Normandy the Germans might have crushed the Russians without delay. Patton and Monty have been ordered via Eisenhower to decelerate so as that the Russians ought to seize as much as them, The British and human beings ought to have taken Berlin yet Eisenhower had to be friendly with the Russians, lot of sturdy that did.

Are you asking if the people of the American continents ( Canada, USA, Mexico,Central and South America) believe this or just the people of the U.S. of America?
Anyway, not Russia, the Allies contributed the most to overthrowing Hitler.
