The beginning of real wisdom lies in realizing how little you actually know. Thinking of it as a journey, You have to have a starting point to begin. Now some of us come to this starting point a whole lot sooner than others. I have been lucky enough to meet quite a few people who I would consider "Wise". They have ranged in age from 80 year old men and women to a child who though just born had the wisdom and love of the ages in their eyes. So who can say where true wisdom lies? I don't think age has a lot to do with it. Though I will say that part of the journey is not only learning from our own mistakes and triumphs but also learning from others. Because lets face it none of use have the time to make all the mistakes ourself. I'll say one last thing and then shut up. One of the greatest pieces of wisdom I was given came from my children. We were watching the news and on it was a story about the war in Iraq. My son looked at me and asked why everyone was fighting. I told him "To be honest I'm not really sure." He thought for a moment and said "Why don't they play dodge-ball then when they are all done everyone can get up and have ice cream?" to which my daughter said "And then we could all have a picnic."

Wisdom is the ability, developed through experience, insight and reflection, to discern truth and exercise good judgment. Wisdom is sometimes conceptualized as an especially well developed form of common sense. Most psychologists regard wisdom as distinct from the cognitive abilities measured by standardized intelligence tests. Wisdom is often considered to be a trait that can be developed by experience, but not taught. When applied to practical matters, the term wisdom is synonymous with prudence. Some see wisdom as a quality that even a child, otherwise immature, may possess independent of experience or complete knowledge. Contemporary culture limits the importance of wisdom and intuition, particularly American culture; Wisdom/Intuition is a right brain activity, while logic is a left brain activity[1].

Experience. Intelligence plays a part as well, but I believe experience is where wisdom is at. Just reading about something and repeating isn't what I would consider as "wise", if the person quoting never really experienced what they are quoting. I can quote anything, yet if they asked me about it in a personal sense, I wouldn't be able to give an answer, unless I had experienced it.

Wisdom is the ability to put knowledge into practice.
But the bible tells us that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom (psalms 111:10) whereas wisdom in this world is foolishness with god (1 Corinthians 3:19).

wisdom and knowledge can be gained from anyone. taking what others have learned in their life and adding this to ones own wisdom and knowledge leads to expanding ones perceptions. there are also those who can teach wisdom and knowledge who are not mortal as mortal wisdom and knowledge are limited to a certain extent.
