Mostly because they were written by different authors over hundreds of years sometimes centuries after the events they purport to describe.

As far as the Bible is concerned, many of the Old Testament ideas were under the Law and the New Testament is about the grace of God that was obtained through the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus.

However, most religious writing can be interpreted by any reader to contradict itself...

The Bible says that we are to learn precept upon precept:

Is.23:But the word of the Lord was to them,
“Precept upon precept, precept upon precept,
Line upon line, line upon line,
Here a little, there a little,”

In other words, to let the Bible interpret itself....

I don't believe they are contradictory.. I believe when you're searching for the truth, you'll find it. Sometimes we try to apply our own logic, and twist things to make sense to us, and when they don't make sense to us, we discount it.

But, in reality, not only do are most religious books completely sound, they also agree with other religious books, regardless of the religious dogma. I see strange connections between Christianity and Buddhism, for example. Just something to think about.

why not? religious truths can't be told in words, only deeds. A tired old man tripped and fell. "Help me, help me!!" he cried. A monk passing by, stopped, and said nothing, but lay down beside the old man.The old man got up and went his way.
Why do you think that is?
How can a man be an angel and an animal at the same time?

I don't know about any thing but the bible, but I can tell you the contridicitons of the bible are on a small scale, which in turn shows history. The main over all theme of the bible never changed nor does it change.

what I believe to be true you may not and what you believe to be true I may not. therefore various authors over the years have written numerous books explaining what they believe to be true. people who agree with the author's basic conceptions will agree and stand by these books while others who disagree will find fault with the author's idea leading to a contradicting thought. economics and power of persuasion may have something to do with this.

The best book ever written is still the Holy Bible, the bible explains itself and is subject to no private interpatation, anyone "AFTER" they pray and ask its author The Holy Spirit to guide them and will compare scripture with scripture, not taking verses OUT OF CONTEXT can understand, but I warn you the point of studying God's instructions book [Bible stands for Basis Instruction Before Leaving Earth] is to DO His will. The only one I ever read that wasn't is the course in miracles.

Probably because it is Jesus' word. Direct and unchanged by people who are trying to improve it.

Because men wrote them and then other men rewrote them to fit their individual needs. If one person wrote the Bible and no one changed it ever then it wouldn't be so contradictory. In other words there are too many cooks in the kitchen.

Because we're viewing them from a finite, limited, human perspective. If viewed from the eyes of God you will find them to be single and united and without contradiction.
