Darlin,
Is he still eating or drinking? Does he get up to go to the bathroom? I think 17 is pretty old for a dog, and not eating or drinking are often signs that the end of life is near. Aging and death are natural processes, and I know you hate the idea of losing him. If he is quiet, and doesn't seem in any pain, you can cover him with a blanket in a quiet place and allow him to die in peace. If your family decides it is right for him, you should call your emergency vet right away. God bless, remember it is ok to grieve for your old friend, and that other pets will need time to grieve, too. My schnoodle looked for his old friend everywhere, for about 4 days, then we moved on. Even though it hurts to lose a pet, and they can never be replaced, it's ok to know you can find more love in your heart to love another pet, sooner or later.

If he is still eating well and doesn't have a cough or runny nose ( a general symptom of kennel cough and distemper), he is most likely ok. Ask a vet to be safe. If everything is well, he's probably letting you know that he's happy and content.
