If you use a secure site and a reliable one (like Amazon) you can use credit card.

There are sites using PayPal, which is an e-commerce business allowing payments and money transfers be made through the Internet. It serves an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders. PayPal performs payment processing for online vendors, auction sites, and other corporate users, for which it charges a fee. As of October 2002, PayPal became an eBay company, a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay. Their corporate headquarters are in San Jose, California.

Finally there are sites let you pay through phone, when - of course - you have to provide a credit card, but maybe they allow sending checks. But, if you mail a check, the merchandise will be sent out only after receiving the check and getting the money. So you can just go into a store and purchase the item you want.

I suggest using credit card, but selecting the site and not giving it to every site asking for it.

Good surfing!

AOL has a pre-paid card service. You purchase minutes on a card like a pre-paid cell phone. I know the cards are available at Walmart for around $10 for 450 minutes. It is good if you aren't on line much.

You can also purchase pre-paid Visa/Mastercards at your bank. Like a "gift card". Figure out how much you need on it to pay for your service for a few months at a time and just keep re-loading it before it gets too low. Those should work too.

I also think AOL has a program you can use to pay by check, but I believe you have to pay ahead.

A lot of phone and cable companies are also running deals on DSL and you get billed with your phone or cable bill. I think that is the easiest and cheapest. If you watch and grab the right deal. There usually is a time agreement with these deals to get the best price.

Good luck...

Get a credit card that offers virtual account numbers. For example, Citicards permits you to generate virtual credit card numbers which will not result in the release of your real credit card number.

you can pay through your bank if you are reluctant to give your credit card information. Net banking will make it easier.
