I've just come to believe that people are stupid...they think the military is going to give them a job and a paycheck, and that they'll never have to give anything back.
And it's not 1 person who went AWOL it's 220 at this point.

The Execution of Pvt. Eddie Slovik
By Zena Simmons / The Detroit News
On Jan. 31, 1945, Hamtramck-born Eddie Slovik was executed by firing a squad near the village of Ste-Marie aux Mines for the crime of desertion. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, supreme allied commander, personally ordered the execution during the closing days of World War II in order to deter other potential deserters.
During World War II, 21,049 American military personel were convicted of desertion, 49 were sentenced to death, but only Pvt. Slovik paid the ultimate price. In fact, he was the only American soldier to be executed for desertion since the American Civil War

Anybody who has been in the military can tell you about malingerers or chronic AWOL/missing movement.
Is there a military unit that does not have one of these types?

Although I don't abide going AWOL or deserting last I checked being in the Military doesn't stop you being a citizen...just makes you covered by UCMJ and civilian laws as well...and don't forget the Geneva Convention....

I guarantee there were more soldiers executed for desertion, of course thought, such things are kept hush hush. If a platoon leader was loosing control of his platoon, drastic measures sometime may be necessary.

The recruiter do very shady things when signing up young men and women. I have heard them make promises of safe deployment just to get them to sign...once the young person signs there is, of course, no promise kept.
This is where they get the ideas they can determine where they are deployed...
