We're not the only ones. Many nations are tearing down their rain forests to accomodate civilization. We get a lot of publicity because our administration thinks green is the color of money.

Everyone is damaging the environment. Even the vegans and vegetarians. They breathe dont they? that means carbon emissions.
The best we can possibly do it obtain carbon neutrality. Which means you plant trees to replace the amount of carbons you would emit during a week or a year or whatever. The environmentalists spend so much time protesting about random stuff to like nuclear power plants, but they dont realise that if we build one nuclear power plant we can get rid of like 4 coal burning power stations. And nuclear powers is extremly clean all it is doing is heating water, the only problem is if something goes wrong, and the nuclear waste. But even then it's stil far better than coal. (Thats in australia by the way).
Everyone is damaging the environment, not JUST the west. Think of how many billions of people are populating the east, probably a small city contains like 3 million people, and even if they dont all have a car or vehcle thats A LOT of carbon emissions. Oh yeah, and they chop down thier rainforests as with we TRY to preserve them.

No. Its not just the West is also developing countries like China that are still using coal to fire their power stations etc.
They also seem to like their cars, a lot more than Western Europeans do anyway.
I watched programme the other week there about the Olympic Games in Beijing. They were saying that China is fast becoming No. 1 for Smog, Noise Pollution, High Sulphur and Carbon levels, Poisoning and damaging of the natural environment (i.e. the three gorges dam which has resulted in the loss millions of acres of land. Ruination of property. Displacement of people). The list apparently goes on and does not look like ending.

Certain areas of the west are trying very hard to change things and as individuals we are I hope all adding a contribution. However, America refuses to fall in line regarding carbon emissions and China and India are racking up their carbon emissions on a daily basis.
Rain forests are disappearing so that the land can be developed for other things and the eastern countries are in need of tourism for their economy which in turn results in carbon from additional aircraft adding to it all.
We seem to be going round in circles on this one but as it is a planet thing then every one on the planet should contribute.
Great question though and some of the more sensible answers will be interesting I am sure.

Of course we are. We live in a consumer orientated society and have a habit of taking the shortest route to getting what we want. This normally means the cheapest and that means cutting corners along the way.
We need to overhaul our entire philosophy to production and what our long term goals are rather than jeopardising the future of the planet's inhabitability (because that's what's at stake) by looking at the short term al the time.
There are the two big superpowers which do more damage to the environment by far in the west it's the US and in the east China.
As most of the 'developed' world is in the west we need to take a lead in policy before it's too late.

That depends on what you are asking. If you mean are we doing all the damage to the environment around the world, then no. If you mean do we contribute to damage done to the environment, then the answer is yes. However, probably not to the extent that the media and alarmists would have us think that we are. Unfortunately, disasters sell and environmental issues are being blown out of proportion.

THe US is the only nation that has the highest consumption rate. It eats up more oil, natural resources like a musle car with oil. Plus with the pollution tax, western nations are putting their pollution in asian countries. The rich nations in the west can pay the goverment in other countries to pollute. is that sending a good message? every nation pollutes and eats ups resources but the US is the only nation to be a resource eater.

The U.S., China and India are the biggest users of fossil fuels, and consumption is growing. If by "west" you mean Europe, then -no. If you mean the U.S. then -yes. But I believe all our efforts only accelerate a natural process - that of the earth warming up between ice ages.

Most definitely yes. But the saddest thing of all is how we've influenced the newer great nations like modern India and China to industrialise and motorise as well. So we're far from the only cause now. It's everybody's problem and EVERYBODY has to solve it. Sparky...If you're serious you should shave your head.
