India is the second most populous country in the world, after China. The population which at the turn of the twentieth century was around 238.4 million, increased to reach 1,027 million in March, 2001 (531.3 m. males and 495.7 m. females). India accounts for a meagre 2.4 percent of the world surface area of 135.79 million sq.km. but it supports 16.7 per cent of the world population. On May 11, 2000 India's population reached the one billion mark. It is estimated that at the present rate of growth (1.93% during 1991-2001) India will overtake China by 2050.

World population is rising at a rate that is unimaginable, and very dangerous.

If this is allowed to continue we will have shortages of every thing.

We are using up the resource at very high rate. People are starving and it will be worst in near future

Something must be done.

Yes, definitely. But in India, some people seem concerned about decrease in population of Hindu community. May be there is truth in it.
