what ever happened to the days when men opened the door for woman? I really have no complaints when it comes to my boyfriend. He does it for me all the time. The car door, at the store, in and out of our home when we are together. Its so nice. What ever happened to men wanting to be gentlemen? Not all men fall into this "category," There are a select few still out there. I say, thank goodness there are. But if youre not and you want to impress a lady, open the door for her....it goes a long way. So...what ever happened to the days anyway?

Women's lib is definitely part of the story, with women demanding equal treatment. But, unfortunately, the whole chivalry thing has been hijacked by a bunch of unsavory men out there. A man who just wants to get a woman in bed, for instance, might play the chivalry card to up his chances and then leave her after a night of sex. Or it can evolve into controlling behavior. When does, for example, escorting her somewhere turn into reducing her to a childlike level? It's not that women don't want respect- it's that a few bad apples have spoiled the bushel.

This sort of courtesy has to be mutual. Why expect men to open doors for you? Do you open doors for them? Courtesy and respect for each other is independent of your gender.
Personally I'm don't think any man should open a door for me if I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself. Sure it may be nice to have "gentlemen" who do things for us all the time. But with that also comes the "gentlemanly" mindset that we "ladies" are weak and fragile and should always looked after and protected. No thank you. Between gentlemen and women's lib, I'll take women's lib any day.

Kids aren't being brought up right anymore. My parents taught me (female) to open doors and hold them for anyone if I was at the door first. My husband opens my car door for me to get in first. When we walk down the sidewalk, he always walks of the "traffic side" of the sidewalk.
It's mostly lost now, but there are still some people who remember and still practice chivalry. They're just hard to find.

there are a few out there who do. some guys are still brought up to be gentlemen. It's nice when it happens, I don't find it offensive. but, I also don't expect it, either. I personally will always hold a door for and elderly person, man or woman, someone disabled, a pregnant woman.....because it's the polite thing to do.

what happened to the days when women were just there to give birth, were in charge of the household, wore corsets and had to be gentle and delicate???
well the corsets are gonners but there are still shobbies out there..women are still inferior in some cultures..
and if so, there are still men that open doors to women..but why should they be the ones that open doors if we have equal rights?
open the door yourself lazy bunz..it's not that hard.
the whole gentlemen thing is not that common anymore..men can be blunt, they don't have to be diplomats anymore..and women can be hardcore, self relient and independant...and they can open the door for themselves.

Equal rights happened. After having courtesy drilled into us by our parents, Women's Lib started yelling "I can open my own door" "I can light my own cigarette". General courtesy became a stigma. I'm old school, I still hold the door, I still walk on the street side of the sidewalk, I still offer a lady my chair and I still stand up when a woman enters the room. The old saw of "Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it" applies.

I think it depends on where you live, I live in Georgia.
Men often open the door for me or allow me to enter the building first. I have also taught my sons to open the door for females.

It all depends on the education they receive.For example some of my colleagues from training will open the door for girls but some won't even move or even close the door in front of you!

My husband opens doors for me also. He was raised that way. Values and morals aren't taught to children these days so they have no clue that they are supposed to do these things. They aren't taught to respect their elders or women or each other. Hopefully those days will come back.
