a well armed insurgent army with the support of the local population without resorting to extreme brutality and attempted genocide?

i mean the state trying to suppress the insurgents. i know some insurgents have successfully waged their campaigns, but i can't think of any state that has won without becoming terrorists themselves. north korea was a state and fought a conventional war with chinas backing. it ended in stalemate.

The purpose of war is not to win.
The state of war is an end in itself.
War gives unlimited powers to the executive and galvanises the poulation behind a common cause. It is desirable for governments to wage wars.

Read 1984 by George Orwell for a more elegant explaination.

The easiest example is the Malayan Emergency, as stated above, though another example would also be Vietnam. Technically, the insurgent war in Vietnam WAS won, however by that time it was irrelevant considering the mass numbers of NVA troops infiltrating areas recently departed by the U.S. military. A true shame. For the Malayan one, try A Long, Long War, by Brigadier General Clutterbuck. Rare but a damn good read.

I suppose it all depends on your definitions. . .but one could say that the UK defeated the communist insurgency in Malaya.
And the leader of the 'Shining Path' is currently on trial.
Were they well armed? . .well maybe not. . but tell that to Ho Chi Minh.
And currently Turkey seems to be doing well agianst the Kurds. . .does it not?
And close to my heart the armies of England eventually beat the Welsh. . .although that was a long time ago.
And lastly, if you are British, what of Northern Ireland, a defeat or a victory? And for who?
So the answer is yes and no, as it so often is.

In the Malayan Emergency from 1948/1960 the communist insurgents were defeated and finally gave up military operations.

Cuba is certainly one.
South Africa is in my opinion another (not the Boer War though)- just have to slightly change your definition of guerrilla warfare .
