"You're an atheist? But you're so nice!"

I was raised atheist but I'm not anymore. Even so, I hate the notion that an atheist must be immoral. My parents are the most ethical and loving people I know. I seriously hate it when people insinuate they are anything other than that.

I've got lots of these, mostly thanks to my emotionally abusive aunt.

Back when I was in college, before I was an admitted atheist, I lived in an apartment on my own about a mile from campus. I didn't go to church and didn't consider myself Christian anymore, but I didn't quite know what I was then. At that point, I was trying to explore other religions to AVOID atheism. Obviously, that didn't work, but that's beyond the point.

I made the mistake of admitting that I didn't consider myself Christian, that I was disgusted with the religion and so forth. Said I wasn't atheist, just didn't know what faith I was as I was trying to find that out. That's probably part of why that was the worst period of time for getting religious abuse and attacks, hence why I generally shut up about it anymore.

One of the people I made the mistake of telling was my aunt, which I did during a particularly rough time in my life when I didn't need her crap on top of everything else.

So around Christmas of that year, I get a notice in my mailbox that I have a package waiting for me at the Post Office. Minute I saw it, I knew it was her. I didn't get much mail outside of bills and junk, let alone outright packages, and if my parents wanted to send something, they wouldn't send it, they'd wait 'till I came home every other week.

I pick up the package, bring it home, and open it, wondering what she could want. Inside is a BEAUTIFUL Christmas stocking, a decorative thing, not to be used for stuffing. Very pretty and I loved it. Yes, at that time, I celebrated Christmas, and I still do, mostly because my family does and if I didn't, well, cat's out of the bag.

There was a letter, which opened with a paragraph about the stocking, with her saying she hoped I didn't mind and early Christmas present. For a second- only a second- I thought "How nice!". Then a sentence later, she said that she hoped she didn't offend me as I didn't consider myself Christian and she didn't know if I even celebrated Christmas anymore, as if only Christians can celebrate the holiday.

Total slap in the face. Admittedly, I wasn't an atheist then, but it doesn't matter as all that mattered to her was that I wasn't Christian. She didn't approve of whatever religion I thought of myself as being at the time and I know she would disapprove of my atheism if she knew about it, so the result would be the same, probably worse. She doesn't know, but she'd still disapprove and still hold the attitude that I can't celebrate Christmas if I'm an atheist. She still would have said the same thing about that stocking had I been atheist then and had she known about it.

She does that all the time, does seemingly nice things, then stabs you in the back and out of all the things she's done, that's the nastiest thing. Ranks right up there with my cousin reccommending this book that was titled "Is God To Blame?". When I looked into it, it was pretty much about people having bad things happen to them and then wondering if God was to blame, if God was punishing them for having the slightest doubt about their faith. That was pretty nasty, too, him thinking I had a "horrible" life because I didn't go to church and was at best a "lazy Christian".

For the record, my life's just great and I'm happy, so he obviously doesn't know what he's talking about any more than his mother does.

So that's the two nastiest things anyone ever said to me about my lack of faith, regardless of whether or not they knew I was atheist. Still counts as far as I'm concerned because their knowing wouldn't change anything and would probably just make it worse.

I have been called 'Satan'
accused of abusing my children and not being a good parent, and that was for being an atheist only, 'a liar', ' a moron', 'a retard',
the list just goes on and on.
Also there is the 'you will burn in hell for that', but christians are alot nicer when they say that.

I had this old dude come up to me at the gas station and explain that Darwin converted to Christianity because he saw my Darwin fish on my car. I told him that that was an urban myth and that he should educate himself instead of believing made up stories. He didn't like that very much.

Someone on here less than an hour ago said that atheists have "horrid lives" because they haven't accepted Christ. I found that pretty interesting.

I never remember things like that, it's water off a ducks back, my rational world view isn't going to be shaken or diminished by nasty comments.

I have been told that I will burn in hell. I just deleted the e-mail and did not respond. His opinion of me was of no importance to me.
