I have a large mountain dog. He's almost a year old and I'm afraid I gave him more love than training as a puppy. I'm home all the time, but he will whine for hours until he gets his way (gets to go outside, has be retrieve his ball from under something). Not only does he whine, but he will nuzzle me and put his head into whatever I'm doing to get my attention. He's so big he pushes me over sometimes! I try to wait for him to stop before I let him out or give him toys, but sometimes I can't always do it so I wonder if I'm sending him mixed signals. I'm 7 months pregnant and very worried that if I dont get him under control he will be dangerous to have in our house even though he's a super sweet dog.

What can I do to tame him? We cant take him to obedience classes because we live in a foriegn country and I dont know the language.

get a tin can, put loose change in it, or nails, make sure it has a lid.

when he whines, or tries to knock u over, shake the can and say this for an example

"harley, bad jump" "harley, bad whine"

u must repeat this until the dog gets it in his head that this is bad behaivor

there is no other way around it

if u don't have this avaible, a whistle will do
and repeat the above command

i did this to my dog and cat for several reasons
for behavioral problems and it solved it

they stopped dead in thier tracts and ran like hell

i am sorry, but it was one hell of a scene and funny

When you get home or walk into the room that your dog is in ignore him. Leave plenty of toys around so he can get one and play by himself...but ignore his whines for attention completely. Once he stops harassing you and walks away and lies down...playing with his toy or whatever 5 mins later call him to you and give him loads of love and attention.

Just keep doing this...never give him attention when he comes to you and asks for it by whining....you set the rules you give attention on your time.

I know it is hard to do but try it - it worked well for our lab who used to jump up and nudge us until he got attention.

Good Luck

Its never too late to train a dog. You could use a newspaper or a flyswatter and smack him lightly on the butt when he does something he's not supposed to do and he will learn. No need to hit him hard because he's already not going to like being smacked especially being givin all the attention he got as a puppy. And Say "No" and eventually you'll be able to just say no and he'll behave. :) hope my advise helped you and Good Luck with your new baby! How fun!

hi.is he fixed?,because that will sometimes help melow out a pet.
but you did mention that you are pregnant,he could also sence that and is trying to get a much attention as he can now, just like older siblings when a new baby arrives.once he see that he is not going to be replaced and your not going to get rid of him, just because their is a new member in the family,he should calm down after a few weeks.

Whining is better than barking all night or roosters crowing all night which they all do all night over here. I suggest you put your dog outside for a few days and it may learn something. When we lived in New Jersey, that's how we taught our dog.
