There was a guy in my neighborhood passing out those little bibles. He gave one to a guy who thanked him politely then tore it up into little bitty shreds and put them all into a waste can. The dude handing out the bibles called the police and complained. The guy who tore it up argued that it was given to him, and it was his to destroy if he saw fit. The cop arrested him anyway for destruction of private property and causing a disturbance.

No I told you the whole story, he was polite and didn't raise his voice ro anything. I'm having a hard time deciding who is really in the wrong though.

Doesn't sound like you have the whole story... Why would the guy call the police if all the guy was doing was ripping up a Bible? That doesn't make sense.

If he was arrested for causing a disturbance, then he'd have to be doing more than just quietly ripping up a Bible and throwing it away...

From a legal standpoint, his arrest could arguably be considered a violation of his right to free speech under the First Amendment. So from that perspective, there was something wrong with this situation.

Of course, plenty of christians would find this man's speech terribly offensive, to the same extent that muslims generally find depictions of the prophet Mohammed offensive. Is it wrong? Depends on who you ask.

if the guy ripped it up...he should not have excepted the book...therefore...i do believe he was wrong for disrespecting the person who was giving the book out. there is no reason to do that if your just going to humiliate someone for it. As for being arrested, there is no law against ripping up a book that is given to you. Although it is destruction of property while the person is still present.

It was his private property and he should not have been arrested. However, maybe it would have been better if he had just not accepted the bible instead of making his point in such a way.

If the guy didn't want the Bible all he had to say was "no thank you"! There is no reason to dis-respect God and to be mean to the guy who was just trying to spread the word of God. The guy who was arrested was actually in a good place when in jail, compared to what hell will be like if he doesn't change his ignorant and spiteful ways!

Love my Lord, and by extension, it's a much better place for non-believers to be burned at the stake than to experience the hell that awaits him. Besides, offending God is illegal. The cops did the right thing, didn't they?

Why did the person first accept the gift and then show great disrespect by destroying the gift? Someone else might greatly cherish that book but it was destroyed.

it's clearly a gift. no different from the coupons handed out at stores. the cops just wasted your tax money. he had every right to destroy it if he wanted to.
