Studying languages and how they changed over time relates directly to the invasions from other places. You can see direct relationships in languages that were once the same but changed because of the isolation of some places. There are many words that are the same in Spanish and Portuguese except in Spanish there is a silent H like harina, and in Portuguese they use an F; farina.

Also, there are many Arabic words used in Spain, but the same words are not used in say Mexico. This is because the Arabs did not inhabit Mexico; only Spain. On the other hand there are many words in latin American Spanish that use Indian words, but those words would not be used in Europe.

Then of course there is the American English and the English of Europe. This change was made because of the desire of the US to be different from Europe and to separate themselves.

There are many aspects of linguistics in history. Much can be learned about the history of different nations and the changes that took place in their languages.
