Respect and equality is something you can not ask for. You gotta earn it, and it may take some time to achieve it. Prove your worth, and make them feel they need you and not the other way round. It has been a hard job to please my father in law, but nowadays we are pretty close. At least up here the former generations have had to work real hard to make ends meet, so it may take some sweat and learning new skills to make them accept you. Even if they don`t , you have proved yourself that you can hack it, which is a great feeling too. And besides, maybe they don`t deserve you... ;-)

Talk to your husband and find out what the deal is. Sometimes in -laws are asses. Specifically the man's mother. There is an apron string attachement where she will tend to become jealous of the leading lady in her son's life. Good luck.

as long as you know that you have earn it than you should not try to buy it from them
talk to your husband about it
you just take care of your family & if you have children involve you make sure that the children always in contact with their grand parents but you don't have too
you can be as formal as you want to be with them

You cannot demand respect, request respect, or even ask for it. You must earn respect. If you respect others, whether you care for them or not, then they will respect you in return.
