I just got a female boxer-brindle mix and I've never had a pet before so instead of looking for facts I want to know if anyone has experienced advice.

Congratulations!!! what did you name your puppy?

About potty training::
ROUTINE is the key..
Feed 4 times per day at the same times daily..Put the bowl away after 10 minutes..
Take him outside after every feeding. He will go about 10-15 minutes after being fed, at his age. It will take awhile for him to learn/develop bladder control, but potty should be easier. Feed on a strict schedule, so that he isn't fed just before bedtime, as he will need to go shortly after being fed..Young pups should be fed and then walked 4 times per day, UNTIL THEY POOP...He will need more frequent outings for peeing...Walk him just before bedtime, to make certain he is empty..You have to stay with him while he is out, or it won't work..
Never scold for mistakes, but give lavish praise every time he goes outside, like he won the spelling bee.....Pups can only hold their pee for 1 hour, per month of age..So, its important to empty them just before bedtime..
Use the same word every time, such as 'do the doody', or whatever..
The most important thing is to watch him closely, and scoop him up and outside when he begins to act restless, turn circles, etc. soon he will whine and look at you when he needs to go.
Be patient...If your patience wears thin, talk to your mom, and ask her how long it took to potty train you...How many times she changed your diaper, and bedding....lol

Meanwhile, you might use baby gates to keep him away from areas where he can do the most damage...

Note: Crate training has disadvantages:

* it doesn't communicate leadership;
* it separates you from your dog when you're at home;
* it can't teach a dog how to behave in all rooms of the house.

A crate can prevent problems, but it provides no real training. Thus, a crate is a training tool, but by itself, it cannot produce results.

Oh! be sure to keep it wormed.. Puppies need de-wormed at least 3 times, every 3 weeks after they are 3 weeks old..

First thing is to read on how to crate train your puppy and do it . Puppies feel safe in small areas. Do Not take her out everywhere for 2 reasons she needs to settle in to her new environment. She has been through an enormous change in her life. Secondly there are a lot of diseases she can pick up, if you have started her vaccines that's great but it does not mean shes protected also there is a new dog flu that has no vaccine and they are just figuring how to treat and yes even under a vets care she could die. Get a good how to book on puppies . No aggressive playing like tug of war, fetch is a better game. No table scraps or people food. Rotate her toys to keep her interested. Lots of positive attention, never hit your dog . Hope that helps, lots of love and common sense will give you a friend that has a unconditional love for you and you'll have a lifetime of great memories together

Hi I have been in dogs all my life & I'm getting a little old now lol...maybe I can help you if you need any info...

First of all you should try to do some easy trianing like getting him/her to sit before you put a food dish down...this teaches control & how to sit...very very simple things & work up to the bigger things...

When he/she as had all the shots needed go along to a training school as they will let you sit in on the training sessions...

This will give you many ideas on what to do but always remember that your puppy is not quite ready for what these dogs that are being trained...

The trainers will help you on matters that you are concerned about & they will be more than happy to share knowledge with you on dog training & more...

SO...you are learning & at the same time your dog is watching & taking it all in & being socialised which he/she needs to be a well adjusted pooch...

You can email me if yu need any info you think might be able to give...
Regards Jake

Read up all that you can on that particular breed. That will give you a little info on the general characteristics and possible temperaments. I just got a Boston Terrier and just having the general understanding of the breed has helped me. One thing in particular that has worked in the potty training area most is to give a people food treat like a small piece of jerky after she goes potty. But only give the particular treat after the duty is done. Your dog will got out do business and head right back for the door for the treat. That is my tidbit.

My mom used to breed dogs. Taking care of a new puppy is fairly simple. Get her to a vet to make sure she's healthy first. Get em some food you know they'll like and thats real healthy wih lots of protein because we all know how big boxers get:). And LotZ n LotZ of Love.
