already have a 4 month border collie, he is not left alone very much but i have been considering getting another, if i do decide to get another i would want to get one while Alfie is still a pup so they would grow up together, but am unsure if it would be best to get same sex or not, whatever sex we get (if we get one) they would both be spayed/neutured to prevent any breeding (not experienced enough for that). I have decided to get alfie done when he is old enough anyway. any advice on which sex i should get or if alfie would be better on his own. thanks.

Hi as a breeder of Border Collies since 1983 I would say get another BC as you know that there energy is pretty vast & another dog would have to be abl to keep up with Alfie...

The sex of the animal will not matter at all if you are to have them fixed...

I have owned, trained, worked obedience, herded cattle & sheep & shown my Border Collies & my best ones have been males...

However the females are also very sweet..they don't take rubbish off the other dogs & are more likely to show the other they don't take it & will put them in there place...not fighting but to show she means business if they push their luck...

It is always better to keep 2 dogs rather than one & when it comes to BCs one will exercise the other as they run together back& forth on a walk...

You can never tire a BC out a they seem to be able to muster up energy from nowhere..having another dog helps them to burn some of that energy & helps them from being bored as being bored make them get a little destructive...training is a must & you can get so very much out of your dog from training him...

If you need any breed info I can be contacted by email thru these msg boards...Regards Jake

If you had got them together it wouldn't have mattered what sex they were because they would have already sorted out their pecking order but Alfie will be top dog now so you will be better off getting a female, the rivalry wont be so harsh. Why are you considering another dog though? You will have your hands full with a Border Collie, go for a breed that isn't as hyper active this time if you really must get another.

I have 4 dogs..
We got Smoookey.our Bc first.(Male)
Then Cain our second 3 years later.Male)
2 years later we got 2 cats Bluff and Zeld.(Female and Male)
And 5 years after that we added Tetley the Choccie lab (Male) and Dizzy the Rottweiller (Female) to the family.
They all get along brilliantly..age seems to make no difference.
It may take a while for Alfie (cute name) to become accustomed to another dog but persevere, he'll love it in the end!!!!

Before getting another puppy, consider whether you have the time to spend with two animals. Dogs like companionship just as we do. Either sex is good as long as spayed or neutered. When fixed, the aggression factor is way less toward each other. Collies are wonderful pets. It is essential that the dog has room to run and romp or that you have the time to exercise the dog(s) daily for at least 20-30 minutes. They are smart too. Don't be surprised if the dog brings empty food dish for refilling or takes its food into the living room to chow down and watch TV. I have a friend whose collie brought its food bowl into the living room and ate its food as it watched TV. Also took the empty bowl to her to refill for him.

B/Collies are very active dogs so should you decide on another dog get one that is active but not as active as a collie. You should get a fem dog as you already have a male. Should you get another male what you might get when they get older is them fighting, I am not saying that it will happen but in most cases you end up having to separate them at meal times when you are not at home etc. Good Luck.

Being as you interned to have both neutered/spayed then it does not really matter, as two male dogs will get on as well as a Male/Female, although you may find that a Female dog will be more dominant.
Good Luck and I hope this is of help to you

Personally I think that oppsite sexes are better, my dog Ben accepted the female Millie instantly but can be on his guard with other male dogs...even though he is neutered....Millie is submissive towards him so that suits him fine..There is no sure steadfast way to guarantee they will get on even if they are opposite sexes, the best way to introduce them is on neutral territory before you allow the new pup in your home. Good luck and I definately think 2 dogs is better than one!

gender does not matter with critters. i have 3 cats and 3 dogs. at this point=4 are male and 2 are female. i have not noticed that one gender does better with another gender. take Alfie with you when you pick another animal. it makes more sense that they get along well.

i have twice introduced a younger dog to an older dog, both have been female and the older spayed, with no problems what so ever.
i would advise that you treat both dogs the same, with any luck they will sort somethings out them self.

I accept as true with magiezbananas! My lab is replaced into very obese now she's skinny cuz she's so previous. My pal's aunt's german sheppard has leg issues yet she is oh so very candy. you need to coach german sheppards a undeniable way so as that they gained't be ruough. while they get tough whent whats up're fiddling with you yelp like a canines so he/she will understand that its hurting you. And labs, they're basically unswerving and LOOOVE enjoying fetch! ~desire I HELPED!~
