We never could! Look at what Bush has done in just 6 years! Regardless of any recent events, look at what Bush and his ilk have done in the name of God and country. Even die-hard conservatives are coming out against the Bush regime now, and encouraging conservatives to either vote democrat, or stay home and don't vote at all. Sad, isn't it, when your own base can't stand you and is catching on to your lies and half-truths?

I have not have been given any situation with gay or atheist yet neither of those character features unavoidably make for a sturdy or undesirable president. Mitt Romney is a flesh presser and a Republican, and your prevalent climate vane that is going which way the wind blows, as do maximum politicians. he's arguably a powerful businesman and could surely do a extra helpful job than Bush, in spite of the reality that that would not slender the sector a lot. to respond to your question, i might incredibly vote for a Democrat gay atheist than Mitt Romney.

Let's see...
Because we've lost our morals and ethics?
Stop the bush--bashing: because billy clinton didn't take care of what he was supposed to-- because he was too busy playing the "i didn't have sex with that woman" thing with monica, while letting osama get the upper hand. lobbing a few cruise missles at them just pissed them off even more. So, when good ol george gets in office...he gets handed this pile of manure. george, not knowing what was in the package, gets it handed to him on 9-11. amazing how everybody "found religion" for about a week. Now this is where all the liberal radicals and fanaticals come into play with their agendas and add to the even more pile of stinking manure. Now everything's all smelly and everybody is blaming everybody else! And it's quite obvious kerry's still doin the flip-flop flopping thing, and doesn't know what to say or how to say it. North Korea's getting ready to "make us glow", because way back in the beginning-- billy boy didn't do his j-o-b, and everybody seems to think it''s the Christians.
so therefore, it doesn't matter if it's evangelicals, liberals, democrats, republicans, voodoo worshippers, or king kong!
What we need is to agree on someone to kick some a and get the j-o-b done!

Their belief system, unfortunately, must be viewed not as a moral given, but just as with any other candidate, you must research their record and open your eyes to look for integrity.
BTW, I am an educated, savvy Christian voter, and I can reel off a lot of names of faithful ministers who happen to reach a large audience. Whole ministries even. Doesn't mean I assume any of them are gifted politically. And I have never heard of this guy until in the news today.
So the assumption that he is popular amongst all evangelical Christians would be quite mistaken.
The mainstream media just loves a train wreck of any sort, and of Conservatives in particular.
I'm not saying not to report, but to be an objective consumer of what is chosen to be "news", how it is reported and by whom.

All of the answers I've read to this point talk about separation of church and state, and bigotry, yet are critical of a particular group because of their religious beliefs. That doesn't quite add up.

We should'nt ....not at all. Anyone that bases a govement policy on their faith is doing a disservice to their constituents. What I will say next will bring some heat, but religion is not based on any kind of fact and that is what is needed in dealing with real issues.

we shouldnt. having a specific religious group with government is favoring religion. and the 1rst amendment CLEARLY says:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

...Why should we trust you or any of your crew, whoever they are? Can you guarantee they would be any better?
...Okay, you tell me who we should trust - do you hold Bill Clinton , Barney Frank, and Ted Kennedy to the same standard? Kennedy and Clinton were known philanderers, and Frank's homosexual "boyfriend" ran a queer brothel out of Frank's basement. Why wasn't there any outrage over these people?
...One more question - if not from our faith/religious tradition (in my case the Bible), where on earth is one to derive one's political ideas and beliefs? I will surely not get them from what is in vogue, from popular culture, situation ethics, or the liberal media (85 % - 90% of whom do not believe in God and would have you to be the same way).
...People have feet of clay. Watch, pray, look at their voting records, and before God vote for the best candidate. I vote for the one who reflects all the values I hold dear.

The short answer is that we should not. As long as government cannot pass laws that affect churches, laws should not be passed as a result of any religious beliefs.

Excellent point. We should never trust the extremists with our freedoms, because they don't believe in them.
This is not the first case of a preacher getting caught being naughty either.
