In the future, I am looking for a very small dog with a sweet, non barking attutude. Any recommendations? I love my big dogs but I am getting older and would like more of a companion dog without the yip??

Most small breeds tend to be yappy making up for size, TRAINING is the key to a well behaved dog. They dislike being alone .Barking ,chewing and digging are how they releave stress and anxiety. Good small breeds are Poodles, Bichon Frisas, Shih tzus, Pekingese, Brussels Grifon, Boston terriers, Pugs to name a few but every dog has its own personality, also check out the new hybrid dogs, some are registered with a kennel club they may have less health problems like the puggles which is a pug and beagle mix, you can get a list of recognized hybrids off your computer there is a lot.

The best breed for a person to own, varies according to many things. There are alot of things to take into account before getting a dog,and it should be based on research into your lifestyle and living arrangements. It should not be based on what breed has been good for another person, you want the right dog for you,not someone else.

Things to take into account include but are not limited to.
1.How big will the dog be when full grown?
2.How much exercise does the breed require?
3.How much grooming does the breed require?
4.Does the dog do well in apartments and small houses,or does it need more room?
5.What is the breeds temperament? How well does it do around children, other people, strangers, and other animals?
6.What health problems is the breed prone to?
7.How smart and easy to train is the breed? Is it good for first time owners,or does it need a more experienced owner to train it properly?

The more research a person does before getting a dog,the greater the chance they will have a well trained lifelong companion, instead of an unruly dog that ends up in a shelter, because you had no idea what you were getting into when you got it.
The site below is a good place to start,it gives a list of all breeds, and will help you answer the above questions.

Almost all small dogs yip and are actually quite loud.I would suggest a shih tzu or an italian greyhound. They still bark but not as much as other small dogs. Or you could look into a basenji. They weigh about 20lbs And they don't bark, but they do yodel.

I get that you may be also avoiding a chihuahua, however, as you know, already having dogs, dogs, like people are each different by personality not breed, you can teach a dog to not bark(yip) just as you teach a child to not yell. Chihuahuas are wonderful companions.

I would recommend a Boston Terrier, small but a little bit stocky. Mine never barks, very rarely even when she plays. The have a funny personality also. That's my two cents.

Sorry, no answer to your question.

Just had to express my dismay that some illiterate people are so determined to add to the vast number of dogs that end up at lost dogs homes/shelters, etc. (No, not your good self. Cast your eyes upwards a little, and join me in a little cringe.)

Look up Tibetian Spaniels. Fantastic little dogs. So sweet and they don't yap at all.
My auntie has 2 and I always "threaten" to steal them.

a pug or a daschund

these breeds can be violent if u don't treat them properly.
even a rotweiler can be a good companion if u treat it well and raise it in a friendly environment.
