Well, if you tried for a few days to live a totally Christian-free lifestyle, you'd quickly see how nearly impossible it is. Cultural clutter and dandruff from Christianity is just plain all over the place, not to mention there's some people who think it's their jobs to talk about Jesus 24/7. Give it a try for a week, you'll be amazed how irritating and unwelcome it is for us Atheists to have to bump into this stuff all the damn time.
So I think it's safe to say that many of us may have had more than passing knowledge of Christianity. Personally, I used to be a Born Again Christian when I was in high school. That was over 18 years ago. I stopped looking at what people said, and what they believed and what they thought they believed and what they thought they were doing, and I just looked at what they were doing.
Once I did that, I saw that Christianity has been hijacked by Republicans. It was being used to suppress women's rights, the right to privacy, the right to freedom from religion, the right to love who you want to, civil rights. And once I saw that, I saw how religion in the wrong hands can do some very evil things to people who didn't really have all that much power to begin with anyways (sometimes not even enough to defend themselves). A lot of people were tricked into being hateful and cruel to people in the name of God. I saw it for the realpolitik - how it really operated and affected people's lives.

I personally think the reason they say there is no God is so they won't have to answer for their horrid life. They are rebellious and somewhere along the way they have stopped wanting any authority figures telling them what to do.
I know why some are agnostics. They have been hurt by the death of a loved one and blame God for killing them. God doesn't kill people. He doesn't call them home. Our home is the earth. We were created for the earth and the earth for us.
The meek shall inherit the earth.
Satan had a lot to do with mankind going bad. He is soon to be destroyed and he is dragging as many down with him as he can.
But people don't want the truth. They would rather believe the lie..
In the garden of eden the serpant told eve she would positivly not die if she disobeyed God. She listened to the snake, ate the forbidden fruit, and her life ended some years later.
So who has the right to tell us what to do?
God.
These unbelievers better start believing ..and quick..because the most important event since the earths creation is about to happen and they don't want to be on the wrong side.

I know so much about these things because of a long journey and search that took me deep into and back out of Christianity again. I've studied many religions and practiced a few.
Many Christians insist on having a label for everyone. Since there isn't anything that makes sense to me to call god, I get labelled 'atheist.' It's like they have to know which box to stick me in. Since I left the church, I no longer live inside a box, with my view blocked off from the rest of the world. (I've been on both sides so don't slag me until *you've* tried it -- I used to think that I knew how to question myself honestly too. Then I realised how much of my thinking wasn't my own.)
But look at the answers here. How many 'good' Christians know it all, insisting that they know why people are agnostic or atheist. That's ridiculous. The answers they give are silly, simplistic and just plain wrong. Why would I want to be a part of that?
Atheists aren't ignorant. Most of us know enough about religion to think about it clearly and carefully.

Good question! My opinion, is that they DO know and are afraid! They don't want to follow in God's ways and are afraid of the consequences of being a non-believer, so they made up a name called atheist and use it as a cozy little way to get around what is real. The only thing they don't understand, is that when the "rapture" starts, they will be "left behind" in a world much worse than it is now, with an anti-Christ ruling for seven years, false prophets, etc. This will happen to them wheather they believe or not!

We've all read the Bible and we've all realized how much we disagree with it. And we're non-Christians directly because of that.
Hell, a lot of atheists here are former Christians. We all know what's in the Bible; if we didn't, how could we have made the decision to reject Christianity?

This is from a couple answers down:
"I personally think the reason they say there is no God is so they won't have to answer for their horrid life. They are rebellious and somewhere along the way they have stopped wanting any authority figures telling them what to do."
What a totally accurate analysis...

Hey an easy one for a change tonight.
I was agnostic for years. I read the bible from time to time - guess I keep expecting something to make me sit up and say "Finally! Something that makes perfect sense to me!" That never happened, and I don't think ever will. I have read the book from cover to cover over 10 times. Literally. I met my boyfriend 2 years ago, and found out he was christian and his mom was an Evangelical. I reread the bible to try to refute some of her more ridiculous claims. (I'm also a liberal democrat, so a lot of bible stuff seems silly to me.)
Then I came here. I was looking for answers, like I have all my life. I should say I have always believed in evolution, even when I was unsure about god. Then one day, Spooky, whom I truly miss, asked a question about one of the Amish girls who died. The child asked that whatever the killer would do, would he do it to her first. She sacrificed herself to try and save her friends. And one woman said - direct quote -
"She knew that God had her back, and then He took all of His children home to be with Him. Praise the Lord!"
I knew right then that I wanted nothing further to do with Christianity. Anyone who would devalue a child's life like that is no one I choose to associate with. The more I see of "christians" the less I like the religion as a whole. Not all the people, mind you, but a religion that accepts the death of a child, the way that woman did, is not for me.

So many people say they are Atheist, but in MY own opinion how can anyone believe there isn't a God or for some a higher being who fashioned our world? Surely an Atheist wouldn't have the first hint about what to do. So I again do not really believe there are any true atheists.

Probably because we researched it WAY more than most Christians.
Because we are sick of bible quotes getting threw out that are not the right meanings to what people think.
I am not atheist, but continue to be called on since I am not Christian.

Anybody who says there is no God is just not thinking straight. In your brain there are 100 billion neurons. Each one of those neurons(remember, there's 100 billion of them) is connected to 1000 other neurons. That comes out to 100 trillion connections in your brain. These connections send electronic signals(and you can measure the electricity) from one place to another. If part of the brain is damaged and you lose some function that is controlled by that part of the brain, the brain can actually re-wire itself and let other neurons in the undamaged part of the brain take over so that you can get back that function. That's only the connections in the brain, not the rest of the body.
Our bodies also have tons of information in the DNA. You have enough information in your DNA to fill encyclopedia sized books stacked from here to the moon and back 500 times. Do you really think that came about by just random chance........kind of like a monkey typing out the works of Shakespear just by randomly plucking away at the keys?
You need to step back and look at the big picture of what is being claimed by evolution, namely, that the unbelieveable complexity of the human brain(not to mention the rest of the body) is nothing more than re-arranged pond scum. It’s pond scum from the original prebiotic soup re-arranged over billions of years into 100 trillion connections in the brain by luck…..just random chance.
Creation is common sense. Wherever you see design there's got to be a designer. That's just common sense. It's like Paly once said. He said that if you're walking along in a forest and you find a wrist watch that keeps perfect time, the only logical conclusion is that it was designed. Everywhere in the universe there is design. Just look around you. Anything that is living is infinitely complex. An atheist has to say what Richard Dawkins says, namely, that there is no real design in the universe.....just the appearance of design.
You just can't logically and realistically deny that there's design all through the universe. It's all around you. You have to be blind not to see it. There are branches of science that basically just study the design in nature.........scientific disciplines such as nano-technology and bio-mimetrics. These disciplines study the design in nature.......whales,bats,dolph... have sonar.......and try to create machines that mimic that design. Everywhere you look there's design. Where there's design there's got to be a designer. That's just common sense. Creation is not an unproven theory. It's a common sense fact that we come to by just using a little logic and reason...........and that's what I think of atheism.
