Basically, champagne has bubbles, and regular wine does not.
However, there are also many types of sparkling wines (Asti Spumante happens to be my all time favorite), but real champage is made in a very specific area of France called, believe it or not, Champagne. Anything made outside that area, with bubbles, is only sparkling wine.
There are also differences in taste. I have a rotten palate for wine, but I can tell you that Asti Spumante is very sweet, which is why I like it, while champagne is quite dry.
And don't sweat it if you don't like champagne. It's an acquired taste, and I actually don't know anyone who likes it well enough to sit down and drink several glasses of it.

Champagne is wine. It is just one particular type of wine, in this case a sparkling wine made by a second fermentation of a wine in its bottle (the method Champagne) in the Champagne region of France.
I am surpised by some of the other answers. Wines do NOT usualy have "typically about 5-6% alcohol", such low alcohol would be very unusual, most are between 12-14% alcohol by volume, and the person who says the difference is that "wine is made from grapes but not champagne" should learn a bit about the subject before answering questions.

Some people refer to any sparkling (read, carbonated) white wine as a champagne, but in fact the only true champagnes come from the Champagne region of France.

champagne is made in the champagne region of france and is considered a sparkling wine -- it bubbles like a soda. there are other wines that bubble like champagne but because they aren't from the champagne region of france they aren't champagnes. Spumantis from italy and cavas from spain fall into this category. then there are wines that are spritzy -- they have some bubbles that give them a little extra zing -- try vinho verdes from portugal but ask the wine dealer -- not all are spritzy.
Most wines wines do not bubble though. Bubbles are an exception and not the norm.

Champagne is made in the Champagne region of France. Also, it is carbonated. Not all carbonated wines are Champagne. They must be produced in the region to be called that. Other than that it is known as Sparkling White Wine.

Basically, wine doesn't produce bubbles and is typically about 5-6% alcohol, while champagne produces bubbles and has about 10-12% alcohol.

To me, if it cost more than $10 a bottle, then it must be champagne.
