The hair on the back of my hair is really.. all crunchy and stuff because I have thick, coarse hair. (for some reason the hair on the back of my head is crappy)

Right now I'm trying to grow it out but my back hair ends up getting all mullety-like. Should I cut the ends so I don't have a mullet or what? I've never tried to grow out my hair so I'm kind of clueless.. but I was thinking cut the ends so I don't have a mullet, but let the upper area grow out?

You already have the right idea of what to do. Yes, you just trim the bottom part off, don't cut the layers or anything else. Maybe you can keep your hair about to the bottom of your neck, then once all of it starts getting longer and blending you can then let it get longer and it won't look like a mullet. Hope I made sense. Good luck

some people's hair is just not suited to being long. make sure you have a good stylist who can keep trimming off the unhealthy hair as it is growing. s/he will tell you if growing it ou is going to work for you. also make sure you are using good products.
