True, it is not fair and we hate working with people who are so full of BS, especially when we come to work every day, because we want to do the "right thing'.
However...........I was told something many years ago by a manager, that I will never forget and will share with you right now..........
You worry about you and not what every one else is doing or not doing for that matter. Make sure you come to work when you are supposed to and do the best job that YOU possibly can do.
What your co-worker is doing is not going unoticed and what you are doing is not going unoticed. Let's see how long your co-worker will be employed versus you.

I have a co-worker like that and it is incredibly annoying. The hard part for me is that she is the receptionist and I sit in the area next to her. When she doesn't come in, I have to move to that spot and am not able to get any of my own work done, which requires I be able to get away from my desk. She has only been here three months and about every week and a half, she calls in. When we had a big rain storm, she called in and said the parking lot at her apartment had mud in it and she couldn't move her car. She called in and said her boyfriend had strep throat and she thought she had it. She came in two days later and sounded and looked fine. Her other go-to excuse is a migraine. And now I am totally perplexed because she is being given a promotion to another department.

I just took a new job, and it is better than the last one, but there are some things I'd like to change.
I have learned on thing from changing jobs several times in my life, and that is this: there is one of each of us in every job. There is a lazy person, a mean person, a gossip, a griper, a troublemaker, a lecher, a ditz, a dum dum, a screw-up, a klutz, a know-it -all, a bossy boots, a minutia freak, some one who hides, an unofficial leader, a tattle tale, a liar, and a call off queen. You can't get away from it, there will always be one, no matter where you go.
So suck it up, go and do your job, and do not worry about hers. If her abscence means more work for everyone else, so be it. Do the work, and be sure to take credit for it, and so should everyone else that has to pitch in and help when she is gone..
I took a call a couple weeks ago, from someone wanting to know if she was going to recieve a low census day [that means the patient census is low, and we do not need her]. No, she was not, I told her, nicely, to come in to work. Ten minutes later she called off for the night, she said she was in an auto accident.. This is against the rules, to call off after asking for the day off, and if administration wishes, it is a write-up. I was told she does things like this all the time. And she was replaced that night.
As soon as administration figures out they are paying benifits to someone who is never there, she will be fired. It just takes time for the abscences to add up, be written up, and acted on.
At the old job, one women counted the days since her last call off, and called off the next day. She never got in trouble, since she did not break any rules of too many call offs in one period. What finally got her was the grand total of call offs, and a poor performance when she did work.
It is not fair, so make sure your own call offs are infrequent, and when you really need them.
I had a supervisor once, who bragged that she came in to work, , no matter what. She sat in an office all day, came out for meetings and lunch, and to smoke. She bragged that she could even come in throwing up, because she had a garbage can right there. And the rest of us did not. And this put her above the rest of us, because she had a garbage can to throw up in,and we were at a disadvantage for this, and certainly beneath her on the totem pole.
At the new job, there seems to be a lot of garbage cans. I moved one close to my chair, and turned around, and said, here's my garbage can for the night. My poor new co-workers were at a loss to why this meant so much to me. Now all I need is the office to put it in!
And yes, people have called of saying they were in the hospital, according to the ex-supervisor, it is illegal to check up on an employee, they can say whatever they want, and call off when they want, it is the number of times they call off that can get them fired.

Sounds like she's crying wolf. If she ever does have a legitimate problem, nobody is going to believe her.
She may be getting away with all these excuses now, but eventually she's going to be caught and won't last too long as an employee. Employers usually don't take too well to an employee skipping out on work constantly.
I know it's difficult to deal with now, but just try to remember that she won't be around for long if she keeps it up. Also, you'll look so much better than her in comparison which will benefit you in the long run. Your employer won't dismiss how hard you've been working and I'm sure you'll be rewarded eventually.

I don't have to pick up his slack so much but like 3-4 times a month you can almost set your watch to his calling out... THEN he has the balls to take his usual vacation days like as if the days he calls in are free days... it's amazing!!!

Your wasting your time thinking about you co-worker. Do your job and worry about yourself. Find something interesting to fill you time and you won't care what she does.

if you are responsible,
pay your bills, etc.
and you see some one that doesn't,
think you are the better person,
to yourself.
and don't dwell on it.
