Everyone is a narcissist, to varying degrees. Narcissism is a healthy phenomenon. It helps survival. The difference between healthy and pathological narcissism is, indeed, in measure.
Pathological narcissism and its extreme form, NPD, is characterized by extreme lack of empathy. The narcissist regards and treats other people as objects to be exploited. He uses them to obtain narcissistic supply. He believes that he is entitled to special treatment because he harbours these grandiose fantasies about himself. The narcissist is NOT self-aware. His cognition and emotions are distorted.

I was married to a man that was so narcissistic, it seemed like a parody. These people are sociopaths, in that they can't empathize with anyone and can only mimic others, so it appears that they have empathy. The world revolves around them, and everyone must do as they ask.

Narcissism is not a disease, it's a state of mind. I have known people that are VERY narcissistic.

If they utter things like "I know you will be attracted to me"
or "I'm gorgeous".
Possibly going as far as thinking I am the best at anything!!
It can be diagnosed, but must be observed. I think it is a personality quirk, because the individual does not see it as negative. It goes too far, when it disrupts your relationship and the individual does not see what you mean or desire to notice/change.

Watch them when they pass a mirror. If they have to stop and look at them selves each and every time they are probably narcissistic. If they say to their image "I Love You" or blow themselves a kiss they're definately narcissistic.

inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity.
Psychoanalysis. erotic gratification derived from admiration of one's own physical or mental attributes, being a normal condition at the infantile level of personality development
Excessive love or admiration of oneself. See Synonyms at conceit.
A psychological condition characterized by self-preoccupation, lack of empathy, and unconscious deficits in self-esteem.
Erotic pleasure derived from contemplation or admiration of one's own body or self, especially as a fixation on or a regression to an infantile stage of development.
The attribute of the human psyche charactized by admiration of oneself but within normal limits.
These are the definitions by dictionary.com. However personally I have had friends, but one in particular...to the extreme of the above definitions to the point...you'll know...because no matter how many times you tell them or show them how they are consumed with themselves above other people...they never learn and they will hurt you to a point you will not be able to forget it.
If this hasn't happened yet...back away very slowly or be very aware of the possibilities and protect yourself at all costs.
Just a warning.

when people refuse to leave the mirror ,keep kissing their reflexcion and mumble over and over that they love me.
if they buy them selves roses, keep patting them selves on the back
say that they are the most beautifull of the land .
and only have sex with them selves .
then it is time to point out that they may be narcissistic
and they could be going to far
