I want to create a database of names and addresses of friends and clients, from which I can make address labels and maybe do letters.

WORD doesn't do it. WORKS doesn't do it. ACT is too big and cumbersome.

u can creat this data base in MS Access easily..if u not familier to tms access you can use ms access wizad to produce data base
