I am only one step away from recieving my blackbelt in tae kwon do. I have a hard time with people watching me do my forms or sparring. I can't focus and I get angry with myself and the person watching me. It seems like every time I do a good kick, no one is looking, but when I do a bad kick, somebody is always watching...I love tae kwon do and I probably will never quit, but the anger and frustration inside me seems to take over my ability to do well in TKD...Any suggestions?

You need more self confidence.I am practicing martial arts too and I really know haw you feel.I'm good but if someone watches me during my training I can't concentrate anymore. It's even harder at contests! Before or during the contest I keep saying in my mind that I'm good,I can do it,there's nothing to worry about.Try to encourage yourself and be more self confident

you are there to the best YOU can do.theres no point getting angry with yourself or anyone else the person grading you will see this(or should).when your doing your grading requirements(kata, routines etc) the only two people in the room are you and him/her. When you are sparring you only have eyes for your opponent, but you must also be aware of eveyone around you as well (getting barreled over by the bloke sparring behind you doesn't look good for either of you)dont conentrate on failure
concentrate on the reason your there to do the best YOU! can do.it's not for me to say as i'm not your sensei(sifu) but maybe you should put your grading of until your confdent?or just stop doubting yourself.be the belt dont let the belt be you.(ask your sifu to explain it's to hard to long to tell you like this)PS.good luck and bushido be with you.i hope this helps.

honestly ability is measured by how well you perform at all times, you can't just say im only bad when people are looking cause then you really aren't good, how many TKD matches are you going to be in 1 on 1 with not another person in sight. Just learn to focus, if you really enjoy the sport you will get caught up in it and be able to forget distractions like crowds.

I'm a green belt in TKD. Don't practice around others when you're at home. Can you be alone in the basement? Or spar with only one other person? We had to meditate before sparring , to clear our minds. It must of worked, because I ended up sending all of the guys that threw me around before I learned how to concentrate, flying to the floor. Trust me. They will never try that again!

i got my blackbelt last year, and when i do taekwondo, it kind of takes my mind off of everything else, and everybody around me, just kind of let it flow. im nervous when i spar, but once im out there im fine, just kind of be yourself, and show what you know, at your blackbelt testing it's your turn to show off, it's your turn to show that you've worked towards this, and are going to keep working!! just remember that when you do a bad kick, you think that everybody has seen it, but that's just because your mad at yourself for doing the bad kick, but when it's a good kick, you are to shy and modest to think that anybody saw it, when im sure somebody did. and when you do do a bad kick, it's not always a big big mistake, because you learn from everything you do wrong

Stick with it this blip in your training is just another hurdle that you will be able to assist other aspiring black belts to get over; put it down to experience; something that you will give to other in the future. Stick with it, you have got this far, its just another one of lifes tests, you will be a better person for getting over it.

Have you tried meditation? Ask your instructor about it. Be aware of what you tell yourself. It may sound strange, but we all talk to ourselves & sometimes we tell ourselves the wrong things. Be sure you tell yourself the right things.
