You should continue reading the book. But I thought your question was sincere. You are saying that the martyrs were twisted and un-enlightened. That is your opinion.
The same people that killed the Martyrs were saying "Where is your God to save you". They said that to Jesus too.
The Martyrs weren't necessarily "willing" to be killed. But they were very very aware that they would be with the Lord in heaven.
Martyrdom was a way to proove how strongly they believed.
In the Roman Empire everyone was pressured to worship the Ceasar. Nobody really believed he was a god, but they all went along with that to avoid getting killed. How much more convincing would it be that Jesus is real, and that what the Christians believed is real if they were willing to die for what they believe in?
If they weren't willing to die, then Christianity was just like any other fad religion that was happening. At that time in history it was crucial that Christians show the importance of what they believe. That's why Paul was willing to appeal to Ceasar in Rome knowing that he would be killed by Caeser. He had an opportunity to escape, but he felt his whole purpose in appealing was to see Nero at any cost. He was beheaded. How strong of a message is that that someone is willing to die for it?
If they didn't really believe, they wouldn'd die for it.
And to the Christians death meant nothing, because they knew that they would be ressurected. You are seeing the picture from your own world view. God doesn't see it that way. He has a plan that has to do with eternity, not our short lived lives. We only live just a short time compared to eternity. Which is more important? Eternity, or just a number of years which are uncertain?
Why would God need to save them? He already did save them.

You exclude totally the possibility that you are dellusional. I submit that they weren't dellusional, they knew exactly what they were doing, and they were ready to stake their life on it, and so they did. And you know what? This life ain't all that good anyways. The better is yet to come. Killing the Christians was not the worst of tragedies for them. They have the highest recognition in heaven, where all ends up. If you truly believe in something, would you be capable of the ultimate sacrifice to make your point? Or would you go with the flow? They aslo had tremendous strength, and if you fail to see the supernatural I can only pray for you. I'd try to look at this another way, if I were you, what if I am wrong and this God business in actually true? How's that for an open mind?
Don't be afraid to experience God. The best is yet to come.

Well, if the person was truely a martyr, why would God have to save them? They would get the highest honor in heaven. That would be a lot better than staying on the Earth, plus, usually through a martyr a point is made, or a new covenent is established?!?

I'm wondering why you consider the martyrs unenlightened, many were killed via persecution based on beliefs that, in many Christians' minds, were very enlightened, ahead of their time if you will. in the case of St. Valentine, he was willing to die to protest a law which , he believed, was against God and his own personal beliefs, and he did die in the name of Marriage and Love.

Try reading more literature from that particular ministry. The Voice of the Martyrs was started by Richard Wurmbrand who was tortured for 14 years in Romanian Communist hell hole prisons, just because he loved Jesus. Check out the wikipedia link:

That is an easy question to answer would you choose the temporary life you have over the eternal life to come? apparently that is the difference in those with faith that they gladly lay down the temporary sinful world for the perfect eternal life that is to come. God knows the truth that this world is is nothing compared to eternity. We are so much more than flesh and there is so much more than this finite world.

We are never promised an easy life in Christ or protection from God. If Christ endured the hardships He did why wouldn't we be expected to? Those in these books are not dellusional. They believed in something with the kind of absolute surity that would cause them to lose their lives rather than deny that which they knew to be true.
Blessed Be

Did you consider the possibility that it is you who are unenlightened? That they had a higher truth and a clearer perception of reality than you have? Have you considered the truth that if there is nothing worth dying for then there is nothing worth living for? God is protecting them, now and forever.

My dear 14yr old friend. You only read the book your grandmama pass you (God bless her soul), don't you read the bible as well?
hahaha.
Christ has taken the sting out of death. Christians today are not afraid of death because we already died. We died to ourselves and is born again in the kingdom of God. Today, if we depart from this world, we are in heaven enjoying and worshipping our Lord. Also read Acts. Stephen willingly laid down his life. Apostle Paul has a lot of miracles in life. I believe for all of them, they just need to ask God for help. It is just that most of them prefer to go home.
