well, first, if your husband passed away only a few weeks ago, it's not a good time to redecorate, really. wait till the rawness of your emotions ebbs a bit, or you'll just be throwing away money and want to redo everything within a year.
if you know how long and how wide your rooms are, in feet, you can just multiply those numbers to get square feet: an 8 by 10 room is 80 square feet, for instance. any halfway competent Lowe's or Home Depot clerk can help you with these kinds of questions, that's why they're there, just ask.
for laminate flooring, you'll want to do a little research and figure out what quality you'll be happy with, what length of warranty you want, and then comparison shop quality-for-quality. just do a froogle search and use that info as a baseline for shopping. besides price, you want to consider quality, warranty, availability and installation

Square footage is taught in the fourth grade. Most people don't remember how to do it. You measure the length lets say 10 ft by the width lets say 10 ft. So 10 x 10= 100 sq ft. Then you have the square footage of your room.
As far as a good deal on wood flooring. I really don't know. There are a number of places that sell this type of product. Including Home Depot and Lowes. I say get a licensed and bonded contractor and make sure you call for references and verify his license and insurance.
Get three estimates. Anyone who wants to charge you for and estimate tell them to get lost.
As far as Paint goes if you have a room that is 15 x 15 one gallon of good quality paint will do. Always paint with the best quality. Use Dunn Edwards They have a AAA auto discount on their paints. Home Depot has Behr paint use their top quality. Lowes has a good paint also. Never paint with Glidden it is the worst paint ever made. Vista is good and Sinclair paint also.
If you need a primer paint have it tinted the same color as the paint color you intend on using. They do this free.
If you see a color in a different brand you can have it custom blended in another brand. Just bring the sample in. Paint comes in flat eggshell semi gloss and Gloss. I like eggshell or semi gloss. It cleans easier. Gloss cleans the best but looks weird except in Kitchens and baths.
Wall Paper is like flooring measure the square footage of the wall.
Always use good rollers when painting. A little tip. You can reuse the roller the next day without washing it. It will actually work better. Put a store plastic shoping bag around it and take it off the roller. Seal up the bag reasonably, and put it in the refridgerator. It will be ready to use the next day or next week. This only works with Latex paint which is what most house paint is now. If you do use oil, which is unessesary, it comes off nicely with lemon or Orange oil. Leaves your hands smelling nice and soft too.
Hope that helps sorry to hear about your Husband.

When measuring square footage you need to know if you are measuring for exact footage... or materials...
exact footage will be length multiplied by width... meaning... measure both walls then multiply the two walls together... if you have a wall that is 5 foot long and a wall that is 10 foot long... the two multiplied together will be 50 sq. feet... if you have a room with a small closet... measure them individually... then add the two together...
If you are measuring for materials... you need to add to the footage... for instance... many hardwood/laminate manufactures recomend that you add 10% of the total sq. footage to the purchase amount... they do this for "cull" wood... or any pieces you get in a box that may be damaged or imperfect...
if you measure for carpet... you generally want to add about 6 inches to the length of the carpet (it is very hard to install if you have a "net" wall) most all carpets come in 12 foot widths... some in 15 foot... so in measuring the width... you'll need to know how wide the materials are going to be... then add the extra to the length of the carpet for seams in the carpet...

Sorry about your husband,my thoughts are with you. In answer to your question, you multiply the height by the length, and you get the square footage.
