What is the normal brain to scientists? I am saying this mainly to adhd because couldn't they be the considered the normal ones and us the "diseased"? isn't adhd more of a personality trait than an ailment? thanks! Blessed be, Val

Interesting question. I would also suggest that this is also going to be a different answer from culture to culture, especially internationally. I think technically, a functional brain, one which can perform to the best of its ability in any environment is going to be the "normal" one. Mental illness in other words would be at the same level of detriment to a normal brain as a physical illness that impairs the brain.

I'm keeping my personal opinion on hold for adhd in this response.
Did I mention it resembles a frisbee 8^)

The normal brain is based on Chemicals responsible for thought processes and their normal ranges in a large population that is continuously updated as the laboratories produce results.
Standard deviations plus or minus 3 usually.
Also this is termed without growths or necrosis.
OK I did this for a living for labs for 15 yrs.

Surely you jest in asking such a scientific question to the rank and file of armchair know very littles. I can only refer you to brain functioning and neurochemistry. But do you really want to know.

My son's best friend has adhd and yes what you observe is behaviour that looks like his personality but it takes biochemistry to keep it in check, and that affects his brain.

people with adhd have excellent multi-tasking skills.

i know some people with adhd that are not very easy to get along with, but they are more successful and motivated in life than those 'normal' people.

to some adhd could be a gift. we are all put in a situation, its what we make of that situation that determines how we can be 'classified' and grouped.

There is no such thing. All human brains are defective in some way. There is no "normal".
