Book of Judges, chapter 9
8: The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9: But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?
10: And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou, and reign over us.
11: But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?
12: Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou, and reign over us.
13: And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

Great story! I think truly happy people don't need to lord it over others. In fact, that's the essence of heaven's peace!

The Prophet Joachim(?) was trying to get the people to rebel against the tyrant Abimelech who had taken the kingdom by force. The next few lines of the parable that speak of the bramble made King over the trees and causing them hurt are needed to give the flavour of the piece but without the history it is still nonsensical.

This parable uses trees as inanimate objects to personify a people. Jotham is telling the Shechemites that they have accepted a worthless murderer as their leader...Abimelech. The point being that only worthless people seek to lord it over others but worthy people are busy doing useful tasks to seek places of authority. The trees (people) were seeking a king but were turned down. In otherwords, they then accepted a thornbush to rule over them.
