In English it's called a helical compressor, also a screw compressor. Try the ref. 1 page for a starter (illustrations are in separate links at the bottom of the page). Looking at the 2nd illustration, apparently a seal is formed between the lower side of the roller and the cylinder it rotates in, forming multiple closed chambers along the long axis of the roller and spiral blade. Rotation moves these chambers along the axis, and they get progressively smaller as they move due to the decreasing pitch of the blade. Ref. 2 describes other versions that use two or more meshed screws.
