How long is the wait from the time you apply until you are landed? I am a US citizen. Also, will it speed things along if I complete the new shorter application or if I provide all the documentation at the time I apply with the longer application.

The processing time for your application will depend on 3 main factors:

The immigration class ( professional, family, business etc.)
The post through which you lodge your application
The complexity of your case.

Generally speaking Buffalo, NY is quite fast as they have a relatively low number of applications. If your credentials match your line of work that you intend to pursue in Canada, which of course would have to be an occupation in demand, you can expect a decision within 6 months or so. My information may be a little dated though. Needless to say a more complex case may take longer.

You also mentioned that you are a US citizen, this also makes you eligible to apply as a "Treaty Trader" which allows you to work in Canada under certain approved occupational sub-groups. If you qualify you need only a firm job offer and you should be able to pick up your vis at the port of entry. This type of visa may not lead to permanent residence, however you may be able to explore other avenues once in Canada. Please note that your application for entry into Canada may be refused if you have a criminal record.

I hope I have managed to answer at least part of your question. I will leave you a link to the offical web site should you need further clarification.

Cheers and best of luck in your immigration endeavours.

I am an American in Canada also, first thing you need to do is register with Canadian Immigration for your visitor pass. This gets you into the immigration system. I don't know what you do but I'm a diesel mechanic. To get a work permit is a fiasco in itself. You have to have some one offer you a job in writting and then the fun begins. To change your car insurance you'll have to have a driving abstract from your home state. To immigrate your car to Canada is a money grabbing fiasco too. To change your driver license you'll need a clearance letter from your home state.
A word of advice, start your permanet resident paperwork right away even before your work permit paperwork. If you have never been insured in the province, for 6 months you will pay new driver rates. With a visitors pass, you can go in and out of the country at will but once you star permanent resident paperwork, no not leave because they don't have to let you back in.
