We are close. The international community is finishing the plans to build a full scale fusion reactor. This reactor, ITER, will be expected to maintain a high temperature plasma for several min, it will have a power amplification of 10+. However it is still an experimental reactor and will not be connected to any sort of power generator.

We already have one. It's called the sun and its a comfortable 93.000.000 million miles away. Still, we can easily harvest it's energy, and its safe, plentiful, and cheap once the collection facilities have been constructed. I was able to cut my energy bill almost 30% just by installing a solar clothes dryer. It worked almost continuously for almost three years, but when it finally broke down I was able to replace it for less than three dollars! Who needs earth based fusion reactors? People who want to overcharge you for the energy they make, that's who.

The last I heard, we had just hit the "break even" point of energy by using a magnetic field to contain the reaction. That is, the energy gain equal to the energy it takes to start the reaction. It will most likely be several decades before a working reaction occurs and several more before its put into commercial use.

We should have it in about 40 years.
They've been saying that for the last 60 years.
