Try yard sales, thrift stores, ebay, local estate sales for decent to good used ones.
Otherwise, research some furniture place in the downtown area of your closest big city.

Try looking at Value City Furniture. They carry many styles and their prices are on the lower end.

The really good ones are still being rebuilt/reupholstered.
Most of them are built cheaply. It's like all good furniture, whatever the style. Good wood and good furniture makers make good furniture. Cheap springs don't do it.
Haunt yard and estate sales. Good pieces, however ugly the look, can always be renovated with a rebuild.

You could also check out IKEA. That's where I bought mine. Or perhaps you should ask yourself, "Do I really need a sofa?" Maybe a loveseat would do just as well. Or maybe you could buy 2 armless stuffed chairs and push them together.

Try www.craigslist.com. Choose the city you are in, and then check under free stuff. You might find yourself fortunate enough to pick one up for nothing.

Sometimes you could find one at a second hand store that's still in good condition. Perhaps you should check around at places that sell second hand things.
