The modern patriarchal religions would have us believe the one God is male, and men recieved from God the concept of worship and religion. Many older religions recognize both a male and a female diety, in some the male diety came first and is dominant, and in others the female, and in some male and female shared equal creative prominance.

Do you think the first rudimentary rites, rituals and traditions of spirituality, religion and magic, and the first concepts of an unseen powerful creative force, or forces, were originally started by men, or by women, and why?

The answer to this question depends on ones point of view.

The Bible stated clearly that Men began to call upon the name of the Lord. So first how do you see that word men? Is it as a male unit or is it collectively as mankind including both man and woman?

Real down to earth life clearly teaches that men usually start something but in the end the woman takes charge and has the power and ability to control the men by beauty, appeal, and sweet charm. A man will die and steal for a woman in a minute ha h. Normally all the spoils of war are spent on the woman.

My Friend I can only say it does depend on which side of the fence you are on.

So with that do smile and have great day and you make up your mind on this one OK

Probably by men, since men are traditionally more aggressive and interested in power and control. Religion isn't about faith as much as it is controlling behaviors we don't agree with. Women are generally more nurturing and not interested in power. If women had started religions, there would probably be no concept of hell, or of sin, for that matter.

I would think the unconditional love and nurturing that a mother has for her babies would have been the first prototype of the Goddess. There are a lot of small figures of women, probably neolithic goddess figures, that would back that.
