First you apply for citizenship. You will receive a letter confirming receipt of the application. After a few months, you will be sent a letter of appointment which is basically for the fingerprints. Later, after a few months, you will get an interview letter. For the interview part, basically, they will speak to you in english to see if your english is acceptable and the test will include 10 odd questions, which will determine your writing & reading skills and knowledge of history. The passing score (I believe) is 8/10. If things go well, you will be taking the oath on the same day and they will give you the Naturailzation Cerificate on the spot. Then you can apply for a US passport on the basis of the Certificate.
You can get a list of test questions (100 odd) from the US immigration website. If you know these questions and answers, the test is a breeze.

From what I have heard the test really isn't that hard. America was founded on some pretty fundamental principals. The fact that you have the intelligence and dignity to enter America in a legal way tells me that you should be able to pass the test with no legal counsel. However, it always helps to have some type of legal representation when processing such important documents or at least an english dictionary for help in some of the more complicated words. Thank you for bringing some dignity and respect to this country.
