Someone just asked a similar question. Technically, dogs don't have periods. They go into heat or season about every six months.
The heat cycle of the female dog has three parts and lasts about 3 weeks. The first part lasts anywhere from 3-14 days during which a bloody discharge and swelling of the vaginal area are usually seen. Next the dog will become receptive to being bred and actively may seek out a male dog. This is the time when she can become pregnant. The discharge may change color at this time and become lighter. Finally, the discharge will become clearer, the vaginal swelling will diminish and the dog will no longer allow herself to be bred. While your dog is in heat you must watch her carefully to avoid unwanted breeding and subsequent puppies. If you are not planning on breeding your dog, please have her spayed to help prevent unwanted puppies

The average length of time for a female dogs heat cycle is 21 days or 3 weeks. Some dogs are in heat for less than this and others are in heat for more than this. Day 1 is counted as the first day that there is a colored discharge from the dogs vulva. The dog is most receptive for breeding between days 9 and 12. It is very important that you keep her away from all males during this time.
If your dog is not being used for breeding it is best to spay her. It is very beneficial to her health and will prevent uterine cancer and also many different uterine infections not to mention unwanted puppies and the mess while she is in heat.
