You can make/drink "safe eggnog." Basically what that means is that you make/drink eggnog that uses pasteurized eggs or egg substitute. Using a pasteurized product means that no further cooking is necessary. Eggnog sold in grocery stores has been prepared with pasteurized eggs. Or you can make/drink eggnog that cooks the egg and milk mixture to 160 degrees Fahrenheit, then you refrigerate it immediately.

Homemade eggnog used to be made with raw eggs. However, since it was discovered that a dangerous bacteria, salmonella, could be acquired through raw eggs, people were warned not to make it that way any more. The commercial eggnog that you purchase in the dairy case around the holidays is made from egg powder or egg substitute.

If you use the eggnog mix from the store there are no uncooked eggs in it so it is safe. If you make homemade look around to find raw pasteurized eggs. Then it is safe.

If you make homeade eggnog with regular eggs, it isn't okay. But, you can get pasteurized eggs that are safe to have raw. Eggnog that is sold in stores uses pasteurized eggs and it is therefore safe to drink.
