I would really like to buy a 2N3053 transistor but no local store has it :(. I'm sure there are equivalents but I can't find any... Could you help please?

Would help tremendously if we knew roughly where you are located on this World Wide Web.....
In the UK you might still get it from Maplin at GBP 0.88

In N.America, you still might get a used one(!) at http://www.sphere.bc.ca/test/tek-parts/tekparts2.html for US$4.50.
It is said that the NTE128 is a suitable replacement, but I'm not sure whether it goes up to 100MHZ as the 2N3053 does.....
